New Starter Cutting Off

Post by mma83 »

Just started my second week and i've 'cut off' for my first time. I'm on a 30 hour contract 9.00-15.00 and took the job as with those hours I can collect the mrs from work and then the little one from nursery. If I stay and do any o/t I will be late picking the mrs up :no no and potentially late, incurring extra charges for the nursery. Also I provided the HRMC with 30hrs a week and wages to go with it. If I do o/t basically all i'm doing is spending the o/t as it goes in my bank and then come April I will get a hefty bill from the HRMC saying I owe them xxx amount.

If I work to guidelines(Except I haven't had any breaks yet in hope of finishing early!) and work my contracted hours, is there anything they can do disciplinary wise? When the mrs passes her test(Hopefully 1st time in 2 weeks) I won't have to pick her/little 1 up so I can CHOOSE when I want to do o/t

Also, is the standard R.M training a day or 2 with a postie who gets u 2 do his sh*t half of his walk, prep all his d2d's and not show you anything in time for your own walk??? Or as the mrs would say 'prdele a robiť to seba' (F*ck off and do it yourself!)

Last moan.....did I hear someone say communication is non-existant, especially from management?????? :silenced

You a perfectly within your rights to cut as long as you make a Manager aware that you intend to do so BEFORE you go out on delivery. Thats not easy when your on a strange round so i would say phone the office and inform a Manager as soon as you realise your short on time.

Its not easy to cut when you first start and well done for having the balls to do it :Applause :Applause :Applause

I understand your need to finish asap but you should really try hard to find time for a break. You will feel better for it with the colder weather now creeping in

Finally have you joined the CWU ? Its money well spent if you do get any backlash from management and you can talk to them with a rep backing you up. :Very Happy

They don't give a flying f**ck how much you will have to pay back to HRMC, they don't give a flying f**ck how much extra charges you will have to pay back to the nursery. All they give a f**ck about is covering duties and trying to force you over your contracted hours - cos lets face it, if your on a 30 hr contract and your a reserve - you stand no chance of ever completing a duty within your contracted hours.

Good for you. There's a lot of long term Posties that have less balls than you and screw it for the rest of us that want to do the job properly.

Just cover your arse and keep management informed.

I prefer to book it rather than cut off. Got nothing better to do though, personally, so a bit of extra money to add to my pile suits me. There's plenty in our office who willingly work up till 4pm some days without saying a thing. "Swings and roundabouts" says them. Swings are only good when you're the one sat on them and roundabouts are only good when it's someone other than your DOM on the outside. Swings and roundabouts are both sh*t when it's Royal Mail, and NEITHER OF THEM EXIST ANY MORE.

Thats exzactly wot they do - get a guy to show u the walk but your allways helping out so it takes alot less time so given the impression it can be possible in time.

either that or they start your training tuesday giving you the misconseption it might be possible again.

then wehn u say its to long they say " but so n so done it" - did he hell and when u ask for a test it wont ever be done

THE BEST THING U CAN DO IS WHEN BEING SHOWN THE WALK REFUSE TO DO SOME OF THE WALK ANDE JUS SAY U ARE MONITORING HOW LONG THE WALK IS GOING TO TAKE THE WALKER.( that sh***s them up big time)

itsa con and a management trick

the sick thing is that the guy showing u round wont admit its to big s there will be reprisals form management if he does .

Think the manager was a little shocked initially when I mentioned 'cutting off', but he came and picked me up and didn't question why I hadn't finished etc......I had less than half a sack(that sounds rude! correct terminology???) and some bits n bobs in my bag.
If all the frame was sorted before I arrive, I could easily finish by 3.00, but as it isn't I didn't get to leave the centre until 11.30(2 other new guys on same contracts, left after 12 and still had to cut off at 4.00)

In 2 minds about my break, I know I should take it, but at the moment it's my ammunition if and when they try to get me to stay over 3pm, if I can't.....along the lines of, I haven't even had a break today so if u want me to stay over, ill go back to the office and sit there for 40mins,then go home

As I mentioned, I finished early Sat, mainly because I knew the round and it was a little quieter, but I swear i'm the only postman here that doesn't know my area!!

Re the union, we are in a new building and not all the workforce has been transferred over yet....there is a union room but has been empty since I started. I will join as I know how some managers target non-union members

HMRC and PAYE doesn't work like that.... so you won't owe HMRC any money if you decide to do the overtime.

Of course you can refuse to do the overtime despite all the pressure that will no doubt be put on you BUT the crappy thing is I guess that your on a 3 month contract? nothing to stop them not renewing you as your an 'awkward bugger!' if you don't.

Training at my office is as long as you need it or a minimum of a week.
Good luck and welcome to the Madhouse :arrrghhh

I thought with the HRMC you have to give them a figure of what you expect to earn....the more you earn the less help you get. And if you go over the amount provided in when first started the job/tax year, you have to pay back the money overpaid to you(as I gave a figure of approx £3000 for a 3 1/2 month contract, if I earn £4000 I will be above the quota and would've been awarded less money per month from the HRMC)

I keep getting told by management, if I keep my head down and help out every so often my contract will be extended. Now, he seems like a nice manager, but is this the common 'do what I say or you will have no job after 3 months'!!

Nope! you get a tax code that gives you an amount that is Tax free. This is split over the year then RM will deduct X percent of your wages after this free bit and pass it on to HMRC the more you earn the larger the deduction although (now listen EVERYBODY!) the percentage stays the same. Its called PAYE.... Pay As You Earn. No bill at the end of the year.

Being nice to your manager because he might not renew your contract is to me just plain WRONG! my sympathies.

Eh? There are one or two exceptions but they involve HMRC paying money BACK.

If he does 1 x 3 1/2 contract and earns £3000 he'll still be paying tax on each pay cheque. If he then stops working and does nothing for a year HMRC will owe him money. if he renews and earns £4000 he carries on paying Tax and still gets a tax rebate at the end of the year. This will keep happening UNTIL he hits the personal Tax allowance of £6000ish
