739's not at the door...

Does anyone know what the OFFICIAL rules are with regards to handing over 739 items while out on a walk?

Example: You correctly 739 an item. You the move on to your next DP. Half an hour later and 3 streets away somebody waves the 739 at you and asks for the item. Do you give them the item*?

Would it matter if it was a special/signed for/too big for letter box? what if you didn't recognise them as living at that address?

Bottom line I don't think that RM give a flying fling BUT if it all goes tits up I haven't got an ounce of faith that they would give me/anyone the benefit of the doubt.

If you were to give an item to someone further into your walk away from the address in question, i'd ask to see their driving license etc as proof of who they were.

I've tried to do this in the past and got a "You taking the piss mate... here's the fooking card!"

I was thinking that if you handed over say a special and it contained something of value and it all went to shite when being interviewed by IB it wouldn't look too good if you said well they had the 739!

The official line is "No mail in the street" - however if I know them I take that into consideration - If I don't I apologise and say "Sorry Mate - van collected it a few minutes ago" or "I've sent it back already mate" if there is a PO nearby.

if you dont want to then just say you have sent it back,gave it to a van etc

You are right - it wouldn't look good.
I understand the desire for posties to get rid of the item.
To keep yourself 100% right I presume you should return to the address and "redeliver" the item to the door. (And get the card back)

Cheers, thanks.... that makes me think is there an official Royal Mail Postman/woman's handbook? I've been with RM for years but what I know of the job comes from being told or shown.

P739 is the reference number of a standard form used by the UK Royal Mail.

It notifies the recipient of a mail item that could not be delivered.

The P739 is used if one of the following occurs:

The item is too large to fit through the letterbox and no-one is available, or
The item requires a signature and there is no-one available to sign.

Once a P739 has been delivered, the recipient can either call their local delivery office to have the item redelivered the next day or may take the card and ID to the delivery office for collection. Recent changes mean that the recipient can also request the item to be left in a 'safeplace' such as a garden shed or left with a neighbour. Safeplace instructions must be printed on the item before it's posted: so the addressees instructions have to be captured by the sender and printed on the item. It can currently only be used with certain services.

Agree with brother Teebs err on the side of caution don't hand mail over in the street.

If they go to the callers office, they only have to produce the P739 and some ID such as a bank card/driving licence/passport etc for the person named on the P739/Parcel.

If I'm out and someone gives me the P739 and suitable ID, then, as far as I'm concerned, that's no different to them collecting it from the RLE. If I know them and I know it's theirs then fine.

Always make sure you get the P739 off em though.
