Engineers on fixed shifts? WTF is all that about??

Common place, I know, for the majority of our delivery and operational colleagues but why in gods name would the powers that be specify having Engineers in Mail Centres on a fixed shift?(Engineer Team Coach). It is the most irrational decision, (from an Engineering prospective), that I've heard to date. They believe that to have an Engineer to hold the shift managers hand on shift will be great. They know very little...obviously..

Probably to actually manage technical issues and problems beyond any comprehension of some "postie-without-a-bike".
When that fateful day arrives (when there's only twenty operators with a technically-trained manager in each mail centre) those ETCs will be the boys to take charge.
Doesn't sound much fun in the meantime though; listening daily to some fat fool carping on about 318s, docket, and how the choccie machine won't give change....

To be honest mate, I really don't think that the ETC will be technically capable of taking charge in the long term. Let me elucidate;
These supposed 'technical experts' or the ETC have been hyped up by the ivory tower crew to be oracles of all things technowizz. However, one little oversight, (the Engineers role is split into three different directions determined by whatever shift you're on that day). You see a nightshift guy will rarely get an opportunity to undertake, for example, calibration set ups or certain asset care schedules, because the mech will be in full swing. A lateshift guy wont know one end of a CSS machine to another..(they don't run them on lates you see) and a dayshift guy will be stuffed on other elements of the job. It's only by rotating the shifts that we can maintain our skills criteria.The only thing these Engineering Team Coaches will be good for is ensuring that the Ops director always smells fresh paint when he/she walks into a mail centre...in a similar way to her Majasty the Queen.
The reason letters has made a recent heavy profits loss isn't because of 'e.mail', it's because RM promote sh*t and keep the good ones where they are at the base of the heap. The upper tiers of management have completely and utter f*cked this business up, through incompetence and lack of insight and ability....
