Derby union rep and help for newbies?

Ive been on deliveries for 5 months now p/t 20hours pw and like most temp contract staff i get sh*t on constantly! Requests for being paid overtime for going over my hours are ignored and management obviously dont give a monkeys about me or any of the part timers. My question is would it be worth getting the union rep involved? Has anyone here had any dealings with the Derby m/c rep is he worth going to? thanks for any help you can give me talking to the managers is like !!

IF you are in the UNION then yes get him involved, but as i suspect you are not (temp contract) chances are he/she
wont get involved????????????????

The Derby Union Reps are pretty good so see one of them.If you don't know who they are , ask around and someone will point you right.I've been at Derby 25 years and compared with some offices it's not too bad - you have to stick up for yourself though and most of the gaffers there are pussies if you confront them.What town/Division you on ?

If you are not getting paid or you don't want the hours dont do them.

I do understand the advice not to do the hours if your not getting paid for them as been reading up on the issue in this forum. But in reality its not that simple when like me your contract is max 3 months long. mines up for renewal in the next few weeks so guess best time to start leaving rows in the office would be after thats signed. Its not easy though for us newbies to come in and kick up a fuss to be treated fairly! I think all the experienced posties have slowly got used to the agressive nature of the RM beast but coming from the private sector i can honestly say i have never been treated so badly by managers!

@ tomangoe - Mainly on town 2 & 4 at the moment but all attempts at getting OT just get the usual 'yeah no problem' and nothing ever comes. Just get sick of begging for money to be honest! Is there any offical OT sheet you can claim for the hours aside from the morning docket sheet?

Yes,its called a Grievance Form - Fill it in with the total O/T your owed and sweeten it with something like - ``I am perfectly happy to work late/flexibly but I really should get paid for it. Your line manager seems to think differently. I cannot afford to fund his bonus.`` And send it to the DOM. As far as renewing your contract goes, mention it to the DOM - go above the Line Manager - being honest and upfront about things might get you respect (and a contract) off the DOM.

@fishtank- thanks again for the links

@Brains- A Grievance Form sounds like an interesting option! From what i hear from my fellow posties though our DOM is actually tighter than our managers. Theres been rumours of him actually crossing out OT and changing hours personally when he feels they are 'excessive'! I believe hes leaving soon though so maybe we will get lucky with his replacement
