problem with a dog

Post by jessiegirl »

so today as soon as i stepped out my van this womans dog came charging out. im sick of it.

sometimes she leaves her front door open and the gate. the dog comes running out ,barking right close up to you - but he hasnt bitten me- yet. Her front door is round the side so you cant see if its open.
i know a few yrs ago he did bite another postman but he didnt report it. :no no

the woman has said to me the usual 'oh he wont harm you' :arrrghhh i didnt say much back to her tbh.

the dog is quite intimidating

so today i took all her mail back to the office . is it worth mentioning to my manager about it- even tho the dog hasnt bit me.

what can be done??

tell your manager, there is a plan of action that RM use, endorse all mail "dog out " date & time, again tell manager on return, they cannot make you deliver to that address if there is a dog on the loose

& give it a boot when the owner isn't looking,if its a small dog :Very Happy

Yes mention it to your manager and he should write a standard letter to her reminding her of her legal responsibilities.

Fear of an attack can be just as bad as an actual attack and you are well within your legal rights to refuse to deliver if you believe you are in danger. It does not matter if her and all 60,000,000 residents of the UK say the dog won't bite, its not a guarantee that it won't and RM policy is that if you feel endangered you should not enter the property or put yourself at risk.

Tell the manager your concerns immediately.

Man up .

Seriously though, round my walk I'm more concerned that some of the people may bite than the dogs! There's one little dog that goes for my ankles every time, has a little nip. I've been around dogs all my life though and it doesn't bother me, I give them a kick or a stern command and they tend to know who's boss. Still never go in a garden when there's a big dog loose, nor do I approach a house where a big dog may be loose without checking. Dog mentality is that you're on their patch, in many ways it's not their fault whatsoever, just instinct, but you've got to exercise common sense when you're around 'big dog areas'. Thankfully, as I alluded to, there are no big dogs that I'm aware of on my walk - for the moment. There's some very friendly small dogs, especially a little Westie that's always wandering the streets (owner in tow!) when I am. Runs over to me and jumps all over me - lovely dog. If you like dogs, of course.

We have a line manager, a bit of a sod really, with almost everything, but mention "the dog was out" or "the door was open and there is a dog", and he says "DO NOT GO IN, RETURN THE MAIL"

I once returned mail for a house every day for almost 2 weeks, when they complained he told them to keep their dog in, then they'd get their mail. I know that management are meant to deliver a warning letter, but it seems the manager didn't fancy facing the dog either.

I have "Demon Dog" on my walk, a lurcher (possibly hybrid), which literally bounces off the lounge window while trying to get at me (bringing the curtains down most days). Apparently the lady's ex-partner is balmed mainly for this, scared the dog to death and now it thinks all blokes are nasty.

Attach a hosepipe to the exhaust and run it into the van through a very narrow gap.
Leave the engine running and take your full meal relief.

One council estate near me has all the front doors on the side of the (semi-detatched) houses, and as a result you are in full view of the back gardens when delivering. Fences on these properties were smashed up/rotted years ago so there is nothing to protect you from whatever beast is lurking round the corner, more often than not a dog is petrolling the garden so you either have to be super silent or super quick! It's got to the point where 1 in 10 letters are endorsed "Dog at large" and brought back to the office.

I have a problem with an alsation on my run the owner once said to me that the dog will not bite you i said to her that i would rather the dog would tell me that,  she has had her mail returned about 20 times endorsed dog out as well as the other 20 houses in her cul-de-sac,royal mail have sent her 4 or 5 letters and the local dog warden has been out with her but still she lets the brute run loose what will it take to get through to her. My manager gave me a dog dazzer but in reading the instructions it said most effective at a distance of 2 to 3 metres a bit to close for my liking.

If any customer tells me, "He's a lovely dog he won't bite you!" I always say, "I love dogs-especially curried!" :whistle
