Everything this morning was just a big steaming pile of poo.

Walked in to discover my walk being thrown up by someone who really is as thick at the proverbial planks (so straight off the bat, I knew I was in for loads and loads of missorts). After clearing up the 'confusion', it was established that I was indeed in this morning (how on earth has my manager not figured out my shift pattern when I've been on the same thing for a year now).

I was yelled at by the union rep to 'count yer mail, every last bit of it, and the same goes for all ya other c@nts as well'.

So, did as was told, did a count.

To speed this post up a little.

Basically, union guy was having a ding dong with the managers regarding our old friend lapsing. He was claiming we had no capacity to lapse, because the mail that had come in wasn't accurate according to the figures the bosses were working to. He was arguing that we had far more mail than they thought and that there was absolutely no way lapsing could be done cos there weren't the hours there.

Pandemonium ensued when we went to have a discussion regarding the situation. It started off sounding like we were going to walk, but then just descended into complete chaos and madness.

My problem is the following peach of a quote from one bright spark when trying to justify why there was just no capacity to lapse

'me, tam, jimmy, fred, peter and barney all come in before our time every day, that shows we just don't have the time to do our jobs as it is. The place wouldn't run so smooth if we came in at our start times'.

How the feck are we going to get the managers to notice we're struggling with muppets like this.

I've done a rough guestimate and figure they are saving the office around £9k a year by doing free work.

I just don't think they realise the managers don't give two hoots about their actual start time, and thus their perceived corresponding end time - they are looking at what should be happening.

So then - what do I do?

Same thing we tell everyone else in this situation,work to your time and cut off or claim docket.

If it was still job and finish I could understand them coming in early. Our place you come and go as you please - at the minute - though I don't think folk realise how much long-term harm them doing this is going to cause. If it concerns you then you're going to need to get everyone together and give a braveheart speech, then endure in seething silence as they completely ignore you and do as they please anyway! I don't understand what's happened with this job, I don't get how it got this way where so many of the staff, seemingly nation-wide, come in early just to finish on time!

Estelle to answer there is nothing you can ultimately.

You can educate,inform and offer advice, but in the end if they want to make stupid decisions knowing the consequences there is not much you can.

Not really,if you do the job properly and you have to go over you get docket for it.
If you come in early and race and chase,you won't need docket to finish.

Have some sympathy here, we had one fella coming in to prep d2d and do his part of collapsed, keep telling him you don't get paid so why bother when you get no thanks and the manager takes advantage of your good will. Tis p/t's which do this as the f/t's tell me all the time. As to what you do, who knows, trouble is the only time they will stop is when we have to work to time signing in & out.

Never come in early !!!!!!!! Unless you enjoy voluntary charity work !!

Some people come in early because they genuinely cannot complete their workload in the allotted time and don't want the aggro of dealing with management every day.
Some people come in early to hide the fact that they cannot work to the agreed standards. They are working for free to save their job (or so they think)

MOST people come in early so they can finish early. If their hours are 6 - 2 then if they come in at 5.30 and don't take their meal relief, they can be finished for 12.50. (And if their mate did the tabletop revision they can be finished at 12.30. Use your car and carry some overweight bags and we're down to 12/12.15) This seems to be some sort of holy grail for a lot of people.
Unfortunately this battle was lost when we moved to later starts because the European legislation on lorry speeds meant all mail would be arriving later in the DO

How they have truly managed to produce an accurate EP for any office given the behaviour of all the stupid tossers who work for RM I really don't know.
