In our office we've been offered to take our nightshifts out and all part time staff up to fulltime.What' the best option?

our delivery office said goodbye to nights long ago! i thought they had gone through out the company,
we had nights in for a few years, but not last year so i doubt they will be used this year, all they do is put a few hours overtime up, savings!!

The problem with making part-timers up at Christmas is that in general they don't know your IPS....so they are not a lot of help in that department.
So.....what exactly are they going to do while you are doing IPS...prep their own walks?

All our nights went a few years ago, but we always have night sorters at xmas. Normally people who don't get a lot of tips off their duties put their names down for nights.

FT we currently do double prep so the idea is for them to help out on IPS which most know...... (we're never by phoning them in most mornings for the office just to function anyway) then prep their own walk reduces full time prepping getting everyone out the door quicker.

We had all our nights taken out about 4 years ago and told they would NEVER return. We are having a revision implemented in the last week of November yes I said last week of November. 7 Walks are being taken out, our bikes are going to be replaced by CDV's and HCT and all of a sudden hey presto our nights are coming back! All the IPS is changing so the DOM is panicking that nobody will know it over Xmas!

If they know the IPS then i would go for that option.
Night feeds are notoriously unreliable during Christmas pressure.
I've seen entire night-shifts wasted waiting on feeds that don't show up until 0430 and with less M/C drivers this year it could be even worse.

thats rubbish. the part timers know equally as much as full timers if not more! there is a guy who has been there 30 years at our office and the other day he was doing packets with me. he knew nothing. all the time i was helping him and Ive been there 3 years mostly as a part timer. in 3 years ive done every walk in our office including rurals and all the driving duties. so when i went on to full time it was no problem as i knew every street in our area and what walk they are on.

Yes....but i don't work in your office.
In some offices all of the part-timers will know the IPS.
In some offices some of the part-timers will know the IPS...and some will not.
In other offices none of the part-timers will know the IPS.

you said in general they were not alot of help in ips. you dont have to be on ips to learn it. you learn more imo by doing the walks, whcih yeah takes longer, but most part timers who start usualy cover and float. anyway. nvm.

IPS also includes firms and other driver's calls which you don't learn by doing walks.
It also includes business replies and it seems none of the p/t staff have ever been told these have a box of their own and need to be counted.
It also includes a lot of missorts which, unless you are familiar with the whole area, means you spend ages looking up trying to find a road that isn't on the opal.
I'm all for p/t staff being made up to f/t over xmas, and I share FTs concerns over the effectiveness of nightshifts given the unreliability of feeds, but just sticking people on IPS isn't a solution.
