TNS Travelling expenses
Every day I travel direct from home, 25 miles to another office than my own and receive TNS payments (Travel something supplement?) of 40p a mile. My DOM tells me that this payment covers the use of my car AND the travelling time which is 35 minutes each way. Is this correct? I realise that I could go into my office and book on and then travel but he says payment for the time travelled is in the TNS payments. Any one know if this is right.

Yes I think he is right. You are only allowed the travelling time if you are conveyed by RM.
I think the extra £140 approx a week more than makes up for the 5 hours travel time.
Tax free may I add. I could be wrong.

There is not a lot of profit in it. The AA puts the cost of running a car at 40p per mile It is 300 miles of travel per week with all the costs that entails and of course its £120 over 6 days not £140.

Yeah you right sorry I misread your 1st post thought it was 35 miles not 35 mins away.
Still think your Doms right though.
If your not happy you could ask to be taken and brought back, and your travelling time will be included in your duty time (or should be).

Re: TNS Travelling expenses
I was on a one day course last month, which involved a round trip of 200 miles(there and back).I was paid 8 hours for the day,5.5 hours traveling and 40p(ish) a mile. The traveling time was paid at a slightly lower hourly rate though.yokel wrote:Every day I travel direct from home, 25 miles to another office than my own and receive TNS payments (Travel something supplement?) of 40p a mile. Your manager is pulling your leg me thinks.
Anytime I have to go anywhere I claim the 40p per mile and the time for travelling.
I never had any objections from my manager and my manager is related to scrooge.
Anything that puts outside your normal duty hours claim.

My understanding of T&S was that its only the cost of traveling and food and NOT any extra time needed to travel from your parent office, to the office they want you to work in.. The start and finish time is always at your parent office.

Re: TNS Travelling expenses
The 40p per mile is ONLY to cover the cost of fuel, wear and tear to your car and to cover the extra cost of business use insurance (which you should have if travelling to an office other than your normal location, if you have a crash, your insurance won't pay out if they find out you are using your car for unauthorised business travel). Business travel cover is cheap, I was about an extra £10 a year, its worth it for peace of mind.
The 40p does not include any element for Travel time. Travel time is claimed seperately. You should be getting your travel time to/from the new office if it exceeeds the travel time to/from your normal office.
I used to audit expense claims in the Public Sector, the Post Office expense system is basically identical.
