Our Fantastic Revision

Just had the results of the revision spat out of the computer, few bits of info for you:

1. walks based on the delivery person walking at 6.2kmph, apparently this was agreed somwhere, our union rep doesn't have a clue who agreed it or why.
2. one rural delivery has 98 drops, yes 98 to be done in a 5 hour delivery span!!!
3. orignally the computer took one walk out of the office but hey presto it's now two!!
4. one walk is 11km long
5. one walk has 900 drops on it, which is unbelievable, oh and absolutely none of the delivery points are flats or terraced houses!!

so what on earth is going on? one day the computer says 1 walk to go , the next day 2!

anyhow we've gone to disagreement over it. area manger reckons we're just scared of change! TOSSER.

900 drops and no terraced lol, he/she be out till midnight. These people are a joke, were having revision in the new year about 20 walks to go :( so may well be out of a job :)

6. 85% is the percentage of doors that you will be going too...which leaves 15% of the doors that you won't be going too on a walk.

I worked with a planner a few years back (2007) and while he was calculating a walk...the walk at a 100% call rate came out at 4hrs 10mins. He then went onto refreshing the page to a 85% call rate and came out at under 4hrs which would leave time for other stuff to do. Anyway....

I told him straight to his face that this would not work as X street would take 20 minutes not 15 minutes...but he wouldn't listen as he was so engrossed with the computer. Unfortunately this has not changed over the years with a 85% call rate still being in place. I hate to say it but it aint going to work!!!...don't tell the planners that though, they will get upset

I agree lol. The average walking pace is 3.5mph...now try and keep that up for 4hrs?

As every walking postal worker knows that you can not walk at the same pace through out your whole duty...their is something called fatigue.

As every walking postal worker knows that you can not walk at the same pace through out your whole duty...their is something called fatigue.

This fatigue ties in with exactly what I keep moaning about regarding breaks and the way that many depots enforce the use of half a days meal relief before you start the walk (which is just plain crazy if you're a part-timer like me starting at 0945... Just exactly why do I need a "health and safety break" within an hour of my start, when I'm going to be walking for upto 5 hours on delivery? ).

Now if you take half your meal relief ~50% through your walk and the remainder ~75% in, your body gets time to recharge and set off again at a faster pace... Win-win!

Oh then you have 23 secs per house on a town and 42 sec on a rural. I think were on a 84% call rate which is prob fair on some of our estates but on the larger posher areas i recon your more like 95%

I saw one walk which i know is a good 3.20 hrs come out at 2.35 wtf.

I love this ~85% call rate that has been mentioned recently, given D2D integration back in June...

Just how does Geo know which 1/6 of the walk are going to get D2D and not be calls that have no other mail that day?

Whats next? A daily program printout each day that works out the most efficient drops to deliver D2D for each day?

My walk on a Tuesday is normally 3 hours dead. Heavier days it runs up to 4 hours. The planner has it marked down as it is at 2.10. Can't argue with him. The computer is correct. Thank god I'm leaving.
