Hello all, I've been reading up on previous topics, and the reason for me signing up is to get some more information.
I'm going to be located in London, and was wondering what the pay was like? Apparently there's a London weighting too? How is the working conditions? Is the chance to be kept on and promtoted to a better role in the company likely? What are the general shift patterns like?

Not sure about London weighting...baldrick wrote: I think the Xmas casuals who are directly recruited and employed by RM (not Agency) do only get minimum wage,
except in London where I understand they get £7.50 ph (or they did last year anyway), and casuals don't get shift allowances.

It's good to get these types of threads, the ridiculous my manager said bollox, so we can reassure ourselves that while the world is falling apart, Royal Mail managers are still being the low-life C***S they have always been.

The daily grind of having to argue your case with an intellectual pigmy of a line manager is physically and emotionally draining.

The pay for Xmas casuals in London last year was £7.50 ph - that is more than outside London. I'd guess it will be the same this year.H10 wrote:Hello all, I've been reading up on previous topics, and the reason for me signing up is to get some more information.

The working conditions for casuals aren't too good. The managers are pretty strict with casuals. You will get sacked if you are even one minute late, so make sure you allow enough time to get to where you will be working.
In my Mail Centre most of the casuals work in a big marquee which, though it has hot air heaters, can get quite cold.
The work is fairly boring, but you will only be doing it for 2-3 weeks.
You can be on early (0600-1400), late (1400-2200), or night shifts (2200-0600).
Some casuals are only taken on for weekend, or evening shifts (around 1700-2200).
There is very little chance of you being kept on permanently, as Royal Mail is planning to close 2 of the 3 Mail Centres in London,
and there will be around 900 jobs lost. The managers will give you the impression that you might get kept on though.
A lot of employers, shops, chain stores, hotels, and others, take on additional staff over the Xmas period, and it might be
worth having a look at their websites, as you might stand a better chance of being kept on after Xmas with one of them.

Re: Xmas Warehouse Sorter - Help Answering A Few Questions?
Yeah I was told it would be £7 plus london weighting of about £2, but maybe I misunderstood. The shift was said to vary, but the 2pm till 10pm sounds about right. I was told the contract was from November till late December...?baldrick wrote:The pay for Xmas casuals in London last year was £7.50 ph - that is more than outside London. It's a role with Parcelforce though so maybe it's different? Also, is the chances of being kept on the same as Royal mail, as I assumed they all came under the same company?

Parcelforce are a seperate company, though they are part of the Royal Mail Group.
The terms might be different for Xmas casuals there, I wouldn't know.
There are some Parcelforce people on here, they might be able to tell you more.
