I love it when people who have had it easy for years(drivers) then get in repicks what some of us have had to put up with for years(a hard days graft), all toys then come out of the pram!! Lets look at it Drivers: usually less D2D's, don't have to carry heavy bags on there backs in all weathers, driving around like they have all the time in the world and still coming back early. About time duties in DO's were made fairer to all.

It may be the case in your office that drivers have a cushy number ... but it isn't the case in all offices believe me (and no, i'm not a driver).
i agree, that in the past, driving was "where it's at",
but, the drivers in our place are pretty much harrassed into doing a s**t load of graft, being made to split a 4 hour walk between 4 of them on top of their driving duties (initially it was a temporary measure, but became permanent),
one had a breakdown (and i don't mean the mechanical type) and considered jacking the job in, even though he has 30+ years in.
don't tar all with the same brush, they are in the same boat as all of us (at least in my D.O.).

Lets look at drivers or even walkers becoming drivers - drawbacks, tracked items, more and larger prios, heavier delivery points, heavier & larger packets, more responsibility, greater legal requirements just to do job, they have to carry your heavy bags to the drop boxes and points and they have to do this for everyone else, they are tracked where they go and get it in the neck if they don't use the most efficient route or they go off it, they get it in the neck from walkers if they are 5 minutes late with bags, they have greater responsibility with regards to H&S, there's bound to be more but as a walker I don't know their job inside out.

So please people don't fall into the trap of them and us, it doesn't make sense, it only antagonises people and worse it helps RM in their Divide and conquer strategy.

am a driver at the moment can not wait to get rid of the van all the hassle of saftey checks traked items i wont be signing for a van job all that hassle for no more money no way will i ever do one again. what i want to know is what happens on a resign when all the driver take walking jobs then what will they do

Ive been a driver/ delivery postman for the past 8 years and when we resign after xmas i am giving up the van.
With the travel time (35 min a day) iam normally running 4.30 hrs to 5 hrs out the office where upon the walkers are all finished an hour before me.

I ve had more and more put on me year in year out and seen my delivery grow 45 mins longer just because i have a van so can take the extra. Then there is "do us a fav,could you drop a bag to me" on the heavy days which just makes my day even longer. Walkers (soon to be me ) tip their packet bags and throw out up to 3rd of the contents, which of course you have to take the lot if you drive and then there is your half a york of over weight parcels/ tracked items on top.

Finally there is the risk of an accident which will affect your own personal insurance costs. Bugger that. Oh then there is the driving allowence which is no longer paid other than to a few (some are walkers) on grandad rights

So i will be going back to a trolley or a bike with an honest straight 4 hr delivery and much less hassle.

1:30hr reg and tracked
2:30-3:00 walk
1:00hr packets + reg/tracked left over from the morning
= I guess some of you can count.

I have this row near enough every day at my place and i try to explain that my actual duty content out side is more than a walkers.
Yes it's easier on the back,but the ones who moan the most passed over the driving duties in our resigns,why,don't want the hassle with the van s**t?

You nenver mentioned the other crucial bit ,being able to do O/T in your duty time and still finnish early ,not having to do isp,
instead you can drink coffe and read paper and talk football with other overworked drivers.
Being able to Park UP and eat your sandwiches,or being able to pop round to the child minders to see the kids.

I do feel sorry for the drivers though the stress they are under is terrible .My driver tells us how bored they get ,they have to play games on their phone !
Last week my driver was so overworked they had a serious problem,15 packets( and thats being genourous) to deliver in 3.5 hours !the next day was a bit easier 2 schools to deliver to in 3.5 hours .

With most people using trolleys these days the number of drop bags have halved,RM is a wicked employer not letting people do
O/T in their Duty time,its their right,they have always done it.

There are good drivers and wank drivers,good walkers and wank walkers,good duties and...........you get the drift.

I suppose it depends on the size of the office as it appears the bigger units have still managed to keep some easy driving duties. When i started 20 odd years ago you had it made if you got on a drive and it was true that often they all would be sitting in a cafe by the office watching for the first postman to come back as it was too early to go back in and sign off for the day.

By the time i was finally able to sign onto driving (some 14 years later) things had changed and all the driving duties contained some delivery aspect as well as parcels and dropping off bags etc. Whats changed since then is the delivery part has been tested and reviewed as same as a walking round and thus been made the same length.
However the driving aspect (parcels, 9am's tracked, dropping bags etc) has remained on the duty and has increased a lot over the last couple of years.

So my delivery is now a full 3.40 min slog with a bag on my back and then instead of heading back with the rest of the walkers i have to cover an area and deliver parcels,OT specials and tracked items. Time you allow for driving out to the area and back all this puts about an hour ON TOP of the walking part bringing it up to 5 hours on a really bad day.

Its only going to get worse as parcels are clearly increasing along with other tracked type services, but there is no sign of reducing the walking content of the duty. So at the moment (certainly in my office) there is no advantage that i can see to driving other than perhaps having a heater in the winter and somewhere it grab a sandwich but i would much prefer to take my break back at the office with a proper cup of tea and a sit down in front of the telly.
