But because the postie now thought they had a defence they were a bit bolder and so the product was next to useless and dangerous. Just buy an AK47 (not one that shoots paint though).

Hardware Controls and Dog Deterrents
RML has made available for a number of years Dog Deterrents in the form of Dog Dazers (Ultrasonic sound device) and Bite-Back Spray (Aerosol peppermint spray). Efforts were made to gather information from the field on the effectiveness of these deterrents, but information returns were low, and those that did respond provided no assurance of a reliable impact on a range of dogs. Trials of deterrent devices took place in the Kent Area and resulted in a similar finding. It is evident that the issue of deterrents of this nature carries a clear risk of Postmen and Women putting themselves in a risk situation due to a false confidence in a deterrent device. As such, it is unclear as to the circumstances under which a line manager could formally adopt one of these deterrents as a control measure, as RML could not warranty their effectiveness at this stage. Consideration was also given to the use of pierce-resistant clothing, but this is bulky and unlikely to be worn by staff during in summer, or indeed at any time. The only hardware control which gave some level of assurance and usability was the "Post it Peg", which provides a specific protection for posting mail through a letter box behind which is a biting dog. Some of the feedback was not supportive, but this did not relate to effectiveness but rather the carrying of the tool.

The official CWU line on dangerous dogs is in fact the trusted AK47 - and there's even an LTB to back it up.
Now there should also be LTBs that refer to the use of AK47s at WTLL, attendance procedures, conduct cases and the Weekly Resourcing Meeting for the rep.

So what happens then to a line manager who adopts one of these deterrents as a control measure, and he/she goes ahead and issues it to his members of staff to use if necessary out on delivery against an aggressive canine, and it does not deter the dog, in fact it makes it even more aggressive and said person is badly injured as a result of the spray deterrent being used.
Remember the LTB has been issued by the CWU Health & Safety Department and up to the time of the issuing of the LTB in question Royal Mail Letters could not warranty their effectiveness at this stage.

last time a dog went for me i got in first and gave it a right boot. i actually kicked the bark out of it for a week (not that im proud as i actually like dogs, i was fairly gutted but i didnt fancy getting bit). its never bothered me since though, f***ing crazy sheepdogs........

F*ck the AK - sure it's reliable and will accept any amount of abuse, lack of cleaning, etc, but it kicks like a bitch, plus it's over 4kgs in weight ( empty mag ) - give me a sawn off shotgun, with 10 size 8 cartridges - that'd take care of any problem, and be half the weight

I've had this dog spray for years! The secret is not to spray it directly at dogs. If they are following you and get too close for comfort, spray a little behind you. when the dog picks up the scent, it trots off.Only on a couple of occassions have I sprayed it full face on to the dog, and it works, I tried this on myself first, as I really do not like hurting animals, but apart from being mildly uncomfortable, it does no lasting harm.

I have a "coffee spray" I use for DOMS. When they start bugging me , I spray a little behind me and they trot off to the coffee machine !
Not sure i need the spray actually. They always seem to head for coffee machine when things get tricky !
