Van share ...failed in Abingdon (oxon)

Trolies and van share system was started a month ago... office got chock of block with packets. Loads of managers were drafted in .... now boys got cycles back. Van sharing is not working.

I really don't understand the logic of this van sharing melarky,but what i have noticed over the years is that managers seem to think that two posties going out in one van to do one duty,should do it in half the time,nice theory but it just doesn't work like that. The whole thing's just a complete farce!

There is nothing wrong with the theory behind van sharing and the use of lightweight and high capacity trolleys.
Whether we like it or not the job is changing and the weight,if not the volume of mail is increasing to the point where carrying a bag is having a detrimental effect on the long term health of our members.
If the system was implemented properly the benefits for us would be welcome.

Unfortunately that's where it all went pear-shaped.
Royal Mail should have accepted that although this system would pay for itself eventually through an increased ability to take on more valuable products liked tracked items and specials...it would cost in more hours in the short-term as duties were adapted to suit the new methods.
Unfortunately they have refused to accept this and gone on their usual short-sighted hunt for savings and screwed the entire thing up.

The theory is sound....the execution is a horrendous f**k up.

Sorry lads, but I think you are all being premature in your celebrations, so much time, effort, planning, finance and reputation has been utilised in getting this idea off the ground, that this faliure will be reinforced and reinforced until either it works in its current form, or the origins ( and originator ) of these plans have been forgotten about, so the failure can be blamed on the intransigence of the workers to fully implement all areas of the plan and the next "grand plan to save the service" can be implemented ( if in doubt, look at the mysteries of the Nazi military procurement processes, 1941 - 1945...the FW190 was a better plane than the Me109, yet emphasis was given to the 109 )

In theory it was a win-win situation.
We get the weight off our shoulders and they get savings from the removal of dedicated packet deliveries.
Instead we get lose-lose.
At some point, someone,somewhere has to show the managers of RM up for what they truly are. (Tossers)

the biggest downfall is the size of duties the planners/RM think can be done with the 2 in a van set up

Saturday i was P&L with another guy
got the duty all done starting on our time and taking breaks
however we left all 'driver packets' and streamed mailsort and 2nd class

Unless there are flats involved...then the small 5kg bag should be used.

Got it,so in affect a 3-30hr walk 'should' near enough go to 4hrs with a trolley,give or take?

It should.....unfortunately when you use pegasus with the correct parameters...it don't.
A 3.30hr walk tends to go to 3.15hrs.
