3 postal workers from same depot commit suicide

Three postal workers from the same depot have committed suicide in the last three months. And Royal Mail bosses have now called in counsellors to comfort grief-stricken colleagues at the sorting office in Enfield, North London. Alexander Campbell, 51, is understood to have taken his own life on October 7, just five days after colleague Derek Lake-Berger, 45, committed suicide. In July, co-worker Steve Bland, 48, was found dead.

It is understood that all three men hanged themselves, although full inquests have yet to be held.
One worker at the sorting office, who did not want to be named, said: 'It's tragic.
'We all used to work so closely with these guys and now they're gone in such a short space of time.'

John McIrvine, the Communication Workers Union representative at the Enfield office, confirmed that counselling was being offered to staff affected by the deaths. 'Everyone is in shock at the moment,' he said. 'We're working with Royal Mail to offer any support to the families affected by these tragic deaths and to any members of staff who need support at this time.'

Last year most of the depot's 200 staff went on strike after management axed overtime. The Royal Mail declined to comment on the triple tragedy other than to offer condolences to families and friends of the three men.

A spokesman for counselling service Samaritans said: 'In light of these three deaths we urge anyone in distress to contact us for confidential support.

'It is important people in distress talk about how they are feeling.'

Condolences to the families, but not surprised - quite a few postman I know are suffering ill-health and others are beginning to feel the stress of the new work conditions imposed on them. There are a lot of angry postmen out there.

Something is wrong there RM not wanting to add to these awful deaths. Working conditions have deteriorated over the years, more work load, more pressure, more bullying, more sick leave, this job really has its pitfalls now.

My condolences, but none of this would of happened if they got the support they needed.

We shouldn't assume that it's work related, may well be personel problems.

but you do spend a lot of time in work please don't defend the undefendable 'royal fail ' ....remember the guy who walked from a rather well paid job in his words ''what royal fail are doing is morally wrong'
