Average Container Fills

Post by Big Daz »

From IWT guide

Average container fills are used by the Mail Centre to calculate traffic for the manual streams. The container fills used as a default within the Indoor Workload Tool are shown below

Manual Letters 216

Manual Flats 81

Manual Packets 190

Oversized packets 31

Indoor Workload Tool Version 6 User Guide – Version 1-3 – Creation Date: 9/06/2010 – Page 17 of 39

Local average container fills can be obtained from the Mail Centre. These local fills can be input to the Indoor Workload Tool to provide a more accurate workload for the handling of containers on receipt into the unit.

Allways go for the higher figure, my MC figures were way down on the national figures in IWT!! It is now agreed to use IWT figures for my D.O which means a lower saving being produced by IWT. By the end of the year we will have more vacanies than there are IWT savings which may mean recruitment.

Hi at our office we have had two counts.
One counting a few trays of letters/ flats and packets and then take an average and multipliy by the number of trays / yorks in the office.
and then comparing the results to the mail centre.
which was not very scientific, But showed that manual letter trays had anywhere between 179 to well over 300 letters in them, and most in the high two hundreds.
The second was more accurate we had a packet count first we counted the yorks then every packet ( this was done by a manager and a union rep on a Tuesday and a Wednesday )
the results when compared to the mail centre figures, Where quiet alarming, On the Tuesday mail centre figures said we had 1558 packets ( we counted 1773 )
on Wednesday the mail centre figures said 1507 ( we counted 2283 )
These reports where passed up the management line, but surprise surprise we have had nothing back.

Many offices in my area have found that their boxes contain more than RML like to say.

Is it any wonder that all over the country delivery posties ares sayig mail is not down and if it is by a much much lower amount than the offical figure.

Time to email my MP!!

We had one of those counts done by the Management, they didn't bother completing it, as the numbers they were getting were far above what they were supposed to be.

Big Daz when i checked our IWT the counts were already input and i was told that was agreed for our area, this was not the same as your figures - is it possible that each area arranges its own figures or is there just one set nationally.

Yours are more suited so i hope its a national thing as it will increase our traffic and improve IWT hours.

I am one of a few sorters left at our depot, whilst the others have been throwing in walks, making cups of coffee etc. etc. Over the past few weeks we have been noticing that a large proportion of the trays with flats in them have a few thrown in on the top and then underneath are large amounts of letters!!!!And then they wonder why the figures are wrong, {and supposedly down} :no no

Any barcodes printed on them letters in black ink? Chances are they've been sorted on a flat sorting machine and so your local MC receives them as flats and so they have to leave as flats.

The answer is both

Sounds wonderful, only problem is that MC figures as was the case with my D.O lower than the national figures in IWT and the MC figures where checked have been shown to be wrong. By changing to national figures RML will only want 4 jobs worth of hours out of the office compare to the original 5. Go back a few months and RM were after well over 500 hours out and now its down to to 154 which for the size of my D.O is achiveable. We will also be up to 7 men down by end of year meaning on paper a recruitment of three new members of staff. RML own figures now show a need for recruitment at my D.O :Very Happy

That said with the demand for OT I shall look at SA being put in place if the mbrs so dsire it.

Daz,when we are due our revision and the various traffic figures are to be used, can we have a manual count like you have done and then use those figures to counter act the MC figures and say bollox, they are wrong?

What you need to do is keep track of how many yorks are coming in and how many boxes are on each for the ones with flats/letters. Take the number of boxes and mutiply by the IWT national figures and if that is higher than the MC figures then use the National. Not using MC figures in any D.O in my branch area, one office has ended up with over 80% uplift in traffic and the minium any office has achived is 2%

Makes you wonder why the management set the MC figures so low :hmmmm

Its pretty much impossible for us to get accurate traffic figures since there is no such thing as letters and flats anymore they all come mixed together. Obviously all the mail that has been through the FSM is mixed but the MS1,2&3 and DSA is mixed aswell. Within a york there will be a mixture of trays of flats and letters and most of the trays with bundles of flats in then have bundles of letters shoved down the side of them. A lot of our mech is crash sorted either on the MTT or FSM instead of being walksorted :arrrghhh Oh and the missorts are horrendous. One day last week i came back from the missort run with 25 trays of letters, 30 trays of flats and 70 specials

Our figures are out - at least for letter trays, having counted a number of trays the results were well above what managements figures were (can't recall figure offhand but definitely below 200!)

But of course they argue that it's an average and some trays don't have much in, lol, anyway don't get me started on that one!

Of course they won't entertain the idea of counting purely because they know their figures would be wrong and we would be proved right and we can't be having that now can we....
