Colleague returning to work after maternity. Job rights?

A colleague in a delivery office I know has returned to work after being off to have a baby

Now she has say 5 years service, as a FULL TIME postie.

She was a spare and is subsequently way down the seniority list , maybe 100th from 115 staff

Now we hear that she is to come back on a 830-230 shift ( 6 hours ) over 5 days so 30 hours total, on her own job that has been given to her


Now this has riled some of my colleagues male and female

female with more seniority said : " do i have to get pregant to get a job then? A disgrace"

male with more seniority " Oh so as im a man I cant do this to get a job, ive had enough"


People dont think its right that a member of staff with little chance of getting their own duty in the repick, now suddenly has their own duty, ahead of others, and taking another permanent job with them.

I can see their point, Where do we stand on this. I ned clarification else there is going to be a bloodbath at our office over this

She may have applied for Family Friendly and perhaps with CWU backing this is the result - certainly worth checking into before everyone goes off at the deep end.

If she want's to return to work on part-time hours she has that right.
Why she would need a specific job during these hours is anybody's guess.
Be careful though because there may be personal/medical reasons behind it that are none of yours or your office's business....bloodbath or no bloodbath.

I don't even get seniority. There are guys in my office who have been there for years and don't have their own walk, whilst there are others who have been around for only a year or so who have THEIR own. How come?

they probably applied for walks that no one wants. cusy walk = lot of competition. ugly walk = little competitions.

Also Full timers might not want to reduce their hours for walk.

I have to admit, it has always miffed me off a little that everywhere I've worked, the women with kids, or who have had kids, don't have to work all the sh*tty shifts because of the "I've got kids" argument. I always thought "well why don't you sod off and get a job that fits in with the hours you're after rather than making those of us who don't have kids, have to work all the bank hols/lates/weekends instead of you when we're all paid the same hourly rate?!".

However, when I have kids, I intend to make full use of such excuses

Probably a family friendly excuse, thats the only case that seniority does not apply! Bugger all can be done about it unfortunitly!

Could be any number of issues eg if its a new mamber taking a run, its probably due to them only knowing that run and RM will not train them on anymore runs! If thats not the case go to your union rep and get what your entitled too, i did and got a smartass removed off a run, only for a deputy manager to come back to our office to get his old job back and put me off it lol But thats life!

Aye April, but on the same note, they also advertised the job as a 9/9:30am start which suits most working mum's when the kiddies go to school, oh how the times are about to change, just hope my IHR is through before then. I chose to have kids, I chose to work the hours they are at school, with the exception of holidays and saturdays, I really don't want that changed 5 years down the line because RM are moving the goal posts so to speak.

Must admit, our holiday sheets go round by seniority in groups. Other than the 2 weeks that are chosen for you, supposedly in a rotation, I say supposedly as the past 2 years I've been down for the first 2 weeks in September. *sigh* Luckily, I managed to get them swapped with a colleague, other than that the sheets going round in groups gives everyone a fair shot at the school hols or bank holidays. So it runs rather smoothly all in all.

I have FF and a kid, I'm a bloke!!! I had to fight for my rights to change hours! I had to reduce them, but get no special treatment for duties. I have one of the sh*tty duties in the DO that no one else wants.

I work the same hours every day at work including Saturdays when the DO staff have long gone home whilst I still have 2 bags still to deliver. I'm stuffed if I have an accident.

AND I work a damn sight harder than some of the lazy f*ckers in our DO who get paid quite a bit more than I do and still finish before me on some days!

In a modern society it is my wife that earns more than me (:evil/mad ) So I do the "household" duties which include kids

RM champion FF but when someone gets it the rest of the DO seem to think its a con! I've had one Lino say to me when I had kids we just got on with it! - Yes 25 years ago you did, the world has changed but these people haven't, they try and install their life experiences on a different society where the rules and regulations have changed!

If they are there use them! Or should we go back to the H&S situation of 25 years ago!
