on trolley trial

I am at great barr do and for 3 days have been on trial with a hct and a revised walk. It is absolutely impossible . I completed on tuesday as it was very light failed on wednesday brought about 1.5 hours work back and thursday just failed the extra new section added onto the walk which is about 30mins work. I am having to push a hct around the whole walk with me and it is killing me, im exhausted using this method the walks need to be made smaller not bigger. the trolley is not allowed to be out of your site for longer than 2 mins. theres 5 walks in our office doing this trial for 3 weeks then i think it all goes live! god help us. oh yes and we have to have our break before we leave. keep you posted.

I actually like using my HCT. Although, there's no way I could push it to EVERY delivery point. I do have to lock it up to a lamp post and leave it for a few minutes.

If they want me to take it with me everywhere, they need to put an electric motor on it so I can get it back up the big steep hills (and hopefully a seat so I can just sit on it too ).

Did they gio-route it as I believe dependant on the terrain the delivery speed for a HCT is slower than a walking only delivery.

Manual Handling rules/guidelines state that you should't move anything unless you have to and then do so at a steady pace. It is therefore going to be slower than walking as you cannot keep the same pace as if you were just walking. You have to slowly set the trolley in motion to get it up to speed, then slowly stop it, apply brakes, ensure brakes are on, deliver mail, start again.

Also, when they're full, they're bloomin hard to get going.

The idea of the trial is to see what "is" possible. Its clear that over the 3 days the walk is behond capacity if your bringing 1.5 hrs back

Just work at your normal pace and be honest about why its failing. I ve always found using a trolley takes longer than a bike anyway and is one reason why i think they are a good thing in the long term. I guess they will want to try trial this over a couple of weeks so keep a note of how much your bringing back.

They did a trial where they cut a van from a duty a couple of months back (it was lighter then) and it was supposed to last 2 weeks but the scrapped it after just 1 as it was hopless.

I managed OK last time... Fair enough it took me 5 hours, I was soaked from the thighs down, couldn't feel my feet and I was physically exhausted... but I managed!

I use a HCT from time to time, depending on the duty. When using a HCT its probably best used if the duty is heavy, has cul de sacs, mainly flat, and is in close proximity to the office. The only time i can see the HTC being a problem is at winter, when the conditions could possibily be icy or pavements covered in snow...then your in trouble.

You mentioned about the trolly can't be out of your sight for at least 2 minutes. I lock the HCT to a lamp post and at the most leave it unattended for around 15 minutes at the most. Not had any problems leaving it locked at the lamp post, but this all depends on the area.

Also mentioned was taking your break before you leave the office...i for one don't have any problems taking a meal relief, as i do this already. Of course some people will grumble over this, but having a break even half of it is actually better for your health.
