Should I Work my Day Off ?

Post by RedBagMan »

Got asked this morning ... yes another p/t guy (24 hrs) - 10 weeks into the jobbie - getting some overtime fairly regularly (one hour prep in morning; the odd row in the afternoon - tried half a walk the other day - no car - bag was well over 16kg - fortunately have always had an A-Z in my bag - never again though  ). Natch would prefer a 30 hour contract (at least) but can beggars be choosers ? In fact a few weeks ago I turned down some O/T and my lino took me to one side and said "Make sure you don't stitch yourself up regarding overtime" - wonder what he meant

What does the team think - gut reaction is "No" - even though 4 hours 48 minutes is not to be sniffed at ...

(and I will be adding to the "annoyances of part-timers" thread after I've cooked my missus a decent tea for when she comes home from her "main breadwinner job" )
"We're under model" - oh no we're not - stick your lapse elsewhere ...

Roughly translated, it means "Any time I'm in the sh*t and can't cover duties, you'll be there to bail me out, but I'll pretend like it's me doing you a favour."

Entirely up to you. Keep saying no and they will stop asking you. Say yes a few times and they will be all over you like a rash to do more. As long as you can stand up for yourself and you want the money say yes. But let them know when you say no you mean it.

It's typical veiled bullying, mate. Forget about it, laugh it off. Learn to say no much more firmly next time.

As regards your question, it's up to you. I would advise you not to not just for the reasons already given (money-wise) but for your own mental and physical well being. Having a day off will leave you rested and in a much better frame of mind. If you work six days a week and do half a walk every day, you threaten to reach a point where your mind and body is constantly in work mode, and the only thing you're going home for is to wait for work the next day. I initially always used to work my day off, but now I never do. Why should I? It's my day off, it's implied that I take it rather than being half-bullied half-connived into working it. It's the same with half-walks. I'll do them when I can be arsed and when I'm not doing anything.

But they can get frakked if they think they're doing me a favour. And the moment anyone implies that by not taking overtime I am somehow committing some grave offence, that's when the deal is off completely - no more overtime, no nothing. I'm on a 25-hour contract, if you want me to do more then give me a 30-hour contract. Otherwise, I'll do extra work on my terms.

If you're on a 24.5hr contract you're day off is 4hr 50mins - 5hrs 10 on a Tues mate that 4hr 48mins you wrote you're bumping yourself out of 2mins n that 2mins pay is better off in your pocket not RM's.

Grab it while you can as it can go as quick as it comes.

It's good to get these types of threads, the ridiculous my manager said bollox, so we can reassure ourselves that while the world is falling apart, Royal Mail managers are still being the low-life C***S they have always been.

Ive been doing at least 49-50hrs a week for about 6 weeks there, 6 days a week! its deff tireing but works about £60 better off for the 9-10 extra hours.
Overtime isnt an issue in our office there's quite a bit of it, sometimes up to 1 hour, it used to be up too two hours a day on each rural until they put a wayside on!

... knew I'd forgotten something - I'm nearly 54 years old :shhhhh - took the job as no-one seems to want a 53 year old Computer Software Developer with 25 years experience (got royally screwed by previous employer - 25 years for £9k redundancy - just enough to pay off the endowment shortfall  )

Think I'll go with the "health" way forward ...

Totally agree with all that...I do it when I can be bothered and say "No" when I cant. When I first started though I tended to feel railroaded into it. ( what i now realise was typical RM psychological bullying) Anyway they always come back asking again they are that fecking desperate. If the union suggested we all dont do it to force RM to hand out longer contracts id be first in the queue but as that isnt going to happen I earn the money when its on offer and I feel like it.
Currently though they owe me a good few hours as they cant even seem to get the basics right like keeping records of who has done what, which surprises me as there are that many linos I often wonder what it is exactly they do do...Anyway until they bring it up to scratch they can whistle for any more..They are quick to ask but slow to pay....Not good and it really pisses me off having to chase it up and keep my own records of every minute worked... :arrrghhh

It's called a day off for a reason.
