Bereavment of a colleague

We are in the unfortunate position of having lost two colleagues in a fortnight.As we are only a smallish unit, 60 people, this has hit us rather hard.We buried the first last week which was a result of a heart attack.He had two children and was only 51 and we were all gutted.Our ever compassionate employer refused time off for us to attend but allowed us to suspend deliveries and attend either the funeral or the wake and then resume on our return.Now a much loved member of the office has commited suicide aged 35 and many of us are desperate to attend the whole process this time.Is there anything we as an office can do so as many of us as possible can attend?

if you think the managers will give you all a day off you are mistaken, if you have any sick leave spare then use some or you are going to have to take this right the way to the top. It will need your whole office to stick together and your unions backing in refusing to work that day.

My best wishes go to the family of friends of the 2 colleagues... You should contact the outdoor dept at HQ and ask for their help ASAP....

all ring in sick and go in your uniform and get the local paper if the family agree to take a photo

could you not all go to the DOM and explain try and talk to them? Obviously the office needs to run but given the circumstances could something not be worked out

See if comrades from neighbouring offices might help you out, POSTCON will expect RML to deliver and collect mail as normal.

Thanks for the comments.Apparently the DOM made enquiries with the area manager but they will make no concessions, they wont even pull the mailsort for that day.I have e-mailed the outdoor representative at the cwu homepage as suggested.
