Coming in early.

I've seen so many posts on this subject,but it's still surprising to see just how many people are prepared to work for free. We used to have the same thing happening in our office until about two years ago when the MANAGER stopped it.
I don't know if this was because some of us constantly complained about it,or if he could just see it was wrong himself(i guess he's not all bad) Whatever the reason,the outcome is that everyone starts on their time every day in our office....mmm... well,not before their time anyway.

What a pity the cwu couldn't have tried to do something similar on a national basis,i'm sure that would have had far more effect in protecting jobs,and gaining extra hours for part-timers,than giving away our d2d money for nothing. Then again,perhaps the cwu feel if we need protecting from our own stupidity.......we really are a lost cause!

I start officially at 6.15am but come in at 5.45am. We work long and shorts so my finish time varies between 1.45pm monday/tuesday 2.15pm wednesday/saturday 2.45pm thursday/friday. I come in early so i can finish 30 minutes before these finish times so i can look after my 4 year old daughter and 2 year old son. I don`t use my own vehicle unlike people who come in on time. I don`t work for free as i am gaining at the other end.

Good work, but don't be too naive at some point I am sure they will say you are finishing early so can take more work, completely igonoring the 30 minutes you came in early. Just be prepared and plan for the eventuality it can't hurt.

slightly off topic but my lino questioned why i came in 5 mins early with 15 mins of mail in my hand,sighing i told him that,i had no 10 min break,delivering would have meant me going over my time by 20 mins,i am on rehab,therefore not allowed to do overtime

he found me most un flexible,expecting me to work for free,he obviously thinks i have no life outside the office,i cannot believe these people

Same thing happened at our place during the summer. A young lad was covering one of the deliveries in his own car in the town where i work (18 miles a day no less). It was on the basis he was given half of his own round on OT all week. Well come weds someone complained that he was getting too much and he was told he could not have the OT all week after all so he said he would go back on his own walk then The manager refused him because his round was covered all week, so he replied "iam not using my car" so they put him on a right crap local delivery instead.

Thats sign of a good manager. gets all his staff to come in at their correct time, easy to manage with his higher boss. He then can see the proper work load on a daily basis!

It really annoys me this slagging people off who come in early. If you don't agree with it, that's fine, don't do it but let's stop with the name calling. Don't forget part of the "flexibility" agreement was duty holders may be allowed to flex their hours if manager agrees. In our office many start half an hour early so that they can finish early. What's wrong with that if managers are happy with it? They don't do free overtime as most of the guys refuse to do any lapsing if it will mean not finishing half an hour early. They work their hours but just move them earlier in the day.

No, it's not the whole office. As there are duties lapsed every day drivers are shuttling people out to their walks two or three times so it seems to work fine, always a van available to jump on for conveyancing and to drop off bags. Mind you the drivers often end up not having time to finish their packets but that's not our problem.

The only problem with that is Royal Mail use test letters to determine our finishing times and make assumptions about our workload based on these results...they neither know nor care that you start early but they do know you finish early.

I'm not interested in calling anyone names brandy,but we've all seen arguments from people trying to justify coming in before their official start times,using cars on delivery and missing meal reliefs,etc...... I think it's generally accepted that all these things have been harmful to the job we do and have instigated many problems within delivery offices,so the sooner they stop the better,surely?
