the compassionate face of RM
I twisted my ankle at work yesterday whilst stepping out of a van. My ankor is swollen and it quite painful to walk on let alone carry out my duties as a driver.
My manager said I should go sick if I can't work but to be honest I can't afford to lose the money. I've only been here for 2 months and he says 1 year is the minimum for sick pay.
Someone in the office said I should request light duties, which I did only to be told there weren't any. So I'm in a bit of a catch 22. I can't do my job properly but need to be here for financial reasons and am possibly making my injury worse.

had the very same when i hurt my back in my first 6 months
the thing is,they dont have to pay you,so theres no incentive to offer light duties
whereas if you get sick pay then they want t get anything they can out of you
plus you have to key in the 'face fits factor'
when i hurt my foot on duty i got told i was either fit for work or off sick,no light duties
low and behold they have a lad in our office on light duties for weeks now (no issue with him as he is a decent guy)

Go to your doctor and get a fit note saying what you can do. They will have to adhere to this and let you work, only problem could they may find you work elsewhere. When it comes to light duites if it cost them money then everyone is no treated the same. If someone at home on sick and returns to light duties then they get some work out of him and managers bonus is based part on getting sick people to return. But if you are on half pay no pay then they are not that keen to get you back because it will cost.

No they don't.....• the information on the form is still advice to the individual. It is not an instruction to the employerpostie222 wrote:Go to your doctor and get a fit note saying what you can do. Question: What happens if I can’t make the suggested modifications to the work/workplace?
Answer: If the doctor has advised that your colleague ‘may be fit for work’, but you can’t make the modifications to help them return to work, you should explain the reasons for this to your colleague and keep a written record documenting why. Details of this discussion should be stored alongside their local sick absence papers (fit notes could be stored here for future reference). The fit note then functions as if the doctor had advised ‘not fit for work’. The individual does not need to go back to their doctor for a new note to confirm this. When considering the doctors advice, you should always consider if the advice is consistent with any industry, or specific safety guidelines or regulations that the doctor may not be aware of.
Question: How does this affect attendance management?
Answer: If the fit note states ‘unfit’, the situation is unchanged from current procedure.
Or (a) if the fit note suggests work modifications and these can be made, the colleague returns to work, while the time on modified duties is regarded as normal work for attendance procedure purposes.
Alternatively (b) if the fit note suggests modifications and these can be made, but there is a delay of a few days in organising the modifications, these days remain as absent/sick.
Finally (c) if the fit note suggests modifications and these can’t be made the individual’s absence will still be considered under the attendance procedure (as Royal Mail will be unable to accommodate them in that instance).

It's good to get these types of threads, the ridiculous my manager said bollox, so we can reassure ourselves that while the world is falling apart, Royal Mail managers are still being the low-life C***S they have always been.

The daily grind of having to argue your case with an intellectual pigmy of a line manager is physically and emotionally draining.

What is the procedure if you go off sick. You offer to come back to do light duties and they say NO. By staying off you trigger a stage 1,2 or 3. Can they still issue it even though you volunteered to return to work before triggering the stage warning.
The time has come to stop turning the other cheek, time to stop shaking our heads in bitter dismay, time to stop mumbling our angry words.
The time has come for union.

Although it would obviously be in your favour if it was to reach the stage of an ET.Finally (c) if the fit note suggests modifications and these can’t be made the individual’s absence will still be considered under the attendance procedure (as Royal Mail will be unable to accommodate them in that instance).
If you are refused light duties ask for the reasons for refusal in writing and speak to your rep about the weekly resourcing.
If they are paying overtime for any work that would be suitable for light duties then they will obviously be digging a hole for themselves.

Well I really should have said b******* to the pay and gone sick. My ankle is now a rather fetching shade of purple. Won't be in tomorrow.

If you are and someone is at fault for your injury then you may be entitled to some compo.
Speak to your local rep or health and safety rep and get one of these.

I am with the CWU and unfortunately the only person responsible for my injury is me. I totally misjudged the distance from my cab to the road (I'd parked wholly on the pavement) and stepped out anticipating terra firma but found thin air. My foot hit the floor side-on and my ankle went through 90 degrees.johnnyp wrote:Arty are you in the CWU?arty_morty wrote:Well I really should have said b******* to the pay and gone sick. To be honest I'm not a big fan of the blame and claim culture that has exported itself from the US. If RM paid me for my sick leave that would be enough for me. I also have to consider the fact that I am hoping my contract is extended; how likely is that if I start getting all litigious?

The next thing you must do is fill out the ERICA form with your manager and get a copy of it.This will record what happened.
Your manager should ask you if you want to speak to ATOS while you are away from work, this is normally done over the phone, and it is they who will decide if you can go on a rehab plan which involves light duties. My advice to you is to stay at home, rest your foot and see if you can claim some money from the link that Postman provided.
If you trigger a stage warning then make sure you and your rep remind the manager who conducts it that you had an Accident on duty which triggered this stage and should not be counted with no stage being issued.Good luck.
