Mail figures drop...my arse!

Sick and tired of hearing the dims saying "But the mail figures are down.........blah blah blah! So can someone please explain why we are having EXTRA sorters, on overtime ,in in the morning to cope with the mail .

Mail volumes are down its true its in the Courier so it must be true.

Problem with royal mail with them saying mail volumes have dropped (once again ) is that royal mail letters have dropped, but i don't think they have taken DSA into account. Thats a different kettle of fish...so i'll let RM keep on spilling out the propaganda but i won't listen till i actually see it my self by not filling out a docket.

To their credit the past few months have been on the light side overall. But that could probably be mostly attributed to the "summer lull". At the moment it's almost a good job, especially when you think back to the horror of the few months before and after christmas when you can't physically fit all the greetings cards, flyers, bills, giros, catalouges, flats etc etc into the address slots on your frame. The sad thing is that this will be a reality again before we know it, it's now September and it's only going to get worse (heavier) from now on.

What they fail to state is that while mail is dropping (if it actually is it's by a minimal amount) parcels are increasing and take up more space and weigh more. It's like being told you've won a tenner on the lottery but have to pay £15 to claim it.

You have to remember also that because of the recession, banks have not been advertising as much for loans. Recession was partly to blame but they can't keep on talking about that for years to come.

Weight is far more important for most of us on a walking delivery than the number of items.

Managers have obviously chosen the count method over weight as it suits their agenda if trying to convince us that the job is getting easier, so that part timers can replaced full timers ands walks can be combined, lowering their depot overheads while no doubt increasing bonus incentives!

I remember back in the 80s having on full brown pouch and another with a few odds and ends in. We got either 2 and half hours for gas bills or took them where we were going over 3 days. No households and just rebate, which once again we took where we going. In at 05:00, sort for one hour, thrown in the frame for another hour. Out by seven, did a few boxes on the way back. in the office for 09:15, 15 minutes facing, break then sort for ten minutes, be out till about 12:15 or earlier then off home. If we did overtime it was a third of a walk for two and half hours plus a share of the meal relief. Often we would finish the overtime before the duty time was up and we had a good laugh.
How you postman do it now for the money you get is beyond me.
