Part time to full time...
I get the impression from reading the posts on this site that hours are only going down, not up. However, in my office part timers have been offered the chance to potentially increase their hours to suit them, whether it be 24 - 30 or 24 to 39. This is apparently because of the new shared vans that are coming in on one sector next week, and God knows when for the rest of the office. It seems to make sense that a part timer couldn't share with a full timer due to disparity of working hours, so bump up the hours of the part timer so he can help throw out the walks and become a more equal member in the partnership.
Is this just my office? Or has it been discussed elsewhere? Surely shared vans is only going to work if the two partners work similar hours, right?

Similar outdoor hours yes, but no need for indoor to be equal.

Re: Part time to full time...
some partimers are allowed extra hours to prep other walks, no one has gone to full time in our office since 2006 and if full timers leave, no full time contract is allowed.

Re: Part time to full time...
But surely the F/T staff who draw the short straw and are paired with P/T are not going to be happy at throwing 2 walks out every morning, especially when their F/T colleagues only have half the indoor work to do. I'll only believe it when it happens but it's on the cards at my office, the increase of hours that is.gb93 wrote:Similar outdoor hours yes, but no need for indoor to be equal.

Re: Part time to full time...
So the promised 75% FT to 25% PT ratio is maintained by....hmm let me guess,
A) It Isn't
B) They get rid of part timers to maintian the ratio rather than making them fulltime
C) Fiddling the figures
D) A combination of the above

You could have 2 PT working together on van share doing delivery only, thus giving 2 FT working together an extra walk each to throw in just the same.Terry Butcher wrote:But surely the F/T staff who draw the short straw and are paired with P/T are not going to be happy at throwing 2 walks out every morning, especially when their F/T colleagues only have half the indoor work to do. Hope you do get increased hours but feel it is very unlikely on any large scale.

That is the idea of your WSM revision,it is to cut indoor hrs.Terry Butcher wrote:But surely the F/T staff who draw the short straw and are paired with P/T are not going to be happy at throwing 2 walks out every morning, especially when their F/T colleagues only have half the indoor work to do. It's good to get these types of threads, the ridiculous my manager said bollox, so we can reassure ourselves that while the world is falling apart, Royal Mail managers are still being the low-life C***S they have always been.

The daily grind of having to argue your case with an intellectual pigmy of a line manager is physically and emotionally draining.

Nearly half our FT walks are covered by staff on temporary FT contracts - at least they were until recently when they were all dropped down to PT hours and the FT staff that are left prep the walks for them.
It's less than 50/50 now in our office.

We already have WS machines in our office...I know the revision includes other things (apparently), but still, how much more indoor time do they think they can shave off?

Re: Part time to full time...
I was going to ask if you can be forced to increase your hours, failing that, can they change your work pattern ie 3 days instead of 5.fishtank wrote:Do you want to move to a 24hr/3 day contract?Exorcist wrote:Myself and 5 others at our depot are on 22.5hr contracts and today we have been advised that we will be going on to 24hr / 3 day week contracts.

Legally first...No they can't force you to increase your hours...Yes they can change your attendance pattern.realitybites wrote:I was going to ask if you can be forced to increase your hours, failing that, can they change your work pattern ie 3 days instead of 5.fishtank wrote:Do you want to move to a 24hr/3 day contract?Exorcist wrote:Myself and 5 others at our depot are on 22.5hr contracts and today we have been advised that we will be going on to 24hr / 3 day week contracts.
However if they change your attendance pattern to such an extent that you can no longer continue to work for the company because of say...childcare issues you MAY have a case for constructive dismissal.
Secondly your rep should not be allowing RM to force part-timers to change their attendance patterns.
There is supposed to be a New Relationship after all...pro-rata probably.
We have made it clear in our office that it will be voluntary only or we don't move ahead.

However it has its drawbacks.
Outdoor work will be massively increased as the indoor work will decrease, specially with more FTers.
There will be job losses due to this.
