New Starter - possibly?

Hi All


I went for Interview and it went really well.

There was nine of us interviewed for three positions. No formal tests on the day , just an informal chat. (i had already passed two online tests)

A few days later, I got an email containing the following.



Dear Andrew

Re: RML********* - Postman/Postwoman

We are delighted to confirm that you have passed your recent assessment and we are moving your application to the next stage. We will contact you again in the next few days to discuss your application further.

Can anyone help me out and tell me what happens next?
(i recieved email on monday and not heard nothing more since?)

When they ring you up, tell them were they can stick there job, and go find a decent job or go to college.

I had one of those after I went for interview, but I didn't get the job. However, a month or two later I got a call from Royal Mail asking if I'd be interested in a position in the same place. Obviously they took someone else and that someone was unreliable or quit and they moved on to me.

Generally, they contact you as jobs come up and if you passed the assessment you'll get a call eventually. That they are in a constant state of flux in terms of seeking new recruits at certain office perhaps tells you a lot about what happens. Very few people are sacked in their first few weeks at a job as allowances are made for them being substandard. So what do you think causes quick staff turnover? I would stress however that it's a job, matey, so take it when offered. But don't expect a lot. You'll be under-trained and like most newbie postmen shall experience, within the first few weeks, a sink or swim phase that shall dictate whether you stick it or not. No-one would blame you if you didn't, I myself am only now beginning to feel overwhelmed by it all.

As many on here shall testify far better than I, the job as it is now is not that appealing. I think that a lot of the old-timers would have to admit that, if they assumed a role as a postman tomorrow as their first experience of the job, they wouldn't stick it out. Others obviously still enjoy it/tolerate it in spite of its foibles, but I think there are those who have very wistful memories of what it meant to be a postman, once upon a time.

I've only been with them for 3 months but I'm really enjoying the job. One of the previous posters was right though, when you start it really is a case of sink or swim. I had a hard time with it at first as I wasn't really physically up to the task, but I have one of those minds that refuses to give in and after a few weeks the fitness kicked in and doing the round was fairly standard and increasing in speed almost every day. Have lost a load of weight since starting and feeling much better physically, so can't complain. It's like going to the gym but I get paid for it!

Go to college or Uni, don't throw your life away please I'm begging. Joining RM was the worse decision of my life and now I'm bloody stuck there, slowly losing my mind and the will to live!!!!!!

Good Luck if you want the work, it's only people with money that can afford principles! Be aware that you will be put upon and taken advantage of. I wouldn't choose it as a decent career move though.

We've had a load of guys start on 12 week contracts. 12 weeks work and then Bye Bye No Hols,No sick Pay, No Pension just lots of work with no Training

Don't want to put you off, if your just looking for some sort term work fine but go in with your eyes open and be aware this company is trying to get rid of all it's Full Time staff and replace them with Part Timers. You're not going to get a Full Time job out of it, ignore the Bullshit from your Manager.

mate all they will do is use and abuse u,i've been with RM 3 years now i am grateful i have a job but work conditions are terrible management suck ,all they do is suck the life out of you, there are other jobs out there iguess it all depends on ure circumstances .

As someone who has been with RM seven months I would concur with all replies you have had,,,As far as I know though getting that email means you have definetely got the job and they will ring you...All I can say is its not easy but better than the humiliation of the job centre and if you still have any energy left after a few weeks you can look for another job while your in one,,,!!
Its deffo sink or swim also but it does get easier as you get used to the ridiculous expectations placed upon you despite no training. Expect some royal shaftings and dont be fooled if they keep you on a walk for a few weeks while your learning,,,It wont last..Not that you can expect any real training although I guess it does depend where you work.
Final thing,,,If you have any holidays booked tell them at once and you will get them,,Otherwise wave goodbye to any expectation of any choice,,You are the floating detrius at the bottom of a large pond,,,

I've been with Rotyal Mail a while now and like the job, but you will have gathered that this site attracts a lot of moaners My interview went fine, I didn't get one of the jobs immediately but started a few weeks or months later. Good luck.

It has a lot of negative points but if you can stick it out it does get better.
