Lapsing & Flexibility

Post by knockoffnigel »

Very heavy day today, If i'd taken all my lapsing, i would have been way over time. Informed my lino that i would only be able to take half of my lapsing, and he went rattling on about "flexibility" .....if i'm over one day, thats fine as another day i might be early and make the time back,he said its in the agreement, and i should go and read it!!
So, my question is..... is this in the agreement, and if it is, does it cover OT caused by lapsing or only OT incurred on your own walk???
I thought lapsing was something we did when time allowed?? Am i wrong?????

Probably not, but just read the 2007 & 2010 agreements and all will become clear as mud

I read the agreement, and like you said, clear as mud!!! :hmmmm
I know we are expected to bail out RM every now and again with 30 mins flexible working, but i thought that was only on our own deliverys?
I thought the whole idea of lapsing, was that it was to be done within our existing time/hours, when possible, the managers now expect it to be done every day, no matter how much mail is on, inc. bulk postings!!! As soon as we say we have'nt time to do it, they roll out the old "flexibility" again!!
If i can find out wether this flexibility covers lapsing OT or not, then i know wether to bend over and take it, or tell the lino where to go!!! :Very Happy

Key word in flexibility is a postman can be ASKED to flex for upto 30 mins.
And lapsing has to be able to be performed in duty hours.
Is that clear enough to use in your discussion with Dom,Good Luck with all the snide comments from colleagues if you do manage to win your argument and get out of lapsing, sure all your lovely colleagues will be happy you had some b*lls and stood up for your rights and they will all follow suit, no bitchin, jealousy or backstabbing in RM

Have PM you with a letter we used in our office regarding flexibility. It stopped that dead in it's tracks. Please feel free to use but take our DO name out :Very Happy if you do.

Aside from lapsing should only be performed up to your time. Flexibility is not supposed to be carried out the way your dom is anyway.

Flexibility is voluntary and can only be used on rare occasions, that is if a van or macjhine breaks down and puts your office up it. What your manager is doing is banking hours ( you went home early yesterday blah blah) and that is not permitted.

Never heard this lapsing "if time allows" thing before. It's compulsory in our office. You take out your lapsing every day before you do your own delivery, no debate.

ABSORPTION – SOME SIMPLE GUIDELINES.

• FIRST THING TO DO IS STOP COMING IN EARLY. START ON TIME

• MAKE SURE YOU TAKE YOUR FULL MEAL RELIEF ENTITLEMENT

• MEAL RELIEF’S SHOULD NOT BE TAKEN AT THE END OF DUTIES

• PUT ALL ADDITIONAL POUCHES OUT

• ADHERE TO THE POUCH WEIGHT MATRIX OR 1st POUCH 16KG MAX - REST 11KG MAX

• DO NOT USE PRIVATE CARS ON DELIVERY

Extract from National Agreement below.

‘Both parties are committed to introducing new ways of working throughout the business by April 2008. (Revised timescales have subsequently been nationally agreed) In order to achieve this there will be a trial in four offices per AGM area covering the following:
- New arrangements to cover for one another and develop sensible options to absorb absences, and increased workload, where time exists within normal hours
- To ensure all paid work hours are utilised
- To creates a working environment where employees, CWU reps and managers feel valued and motivated.
This flexibility could also facilitate arrangements for employees to make their own arrangements to cover and swap duties (subject to approval from their manager) – within contracted hours, providing quality of service is not adversely affected and there are no additional costs to the business’.

• Bombard managers with requests to finish early, start late and swap duties

• CWU reps should ask managers to demonstrate how they have identified spare capacity on a delivery. Also how have they come up with the amount of work that is being asked to absorb. Can we see the calculation? This is a perfectly reasonable request. If you are not happy invoke the IR Framework.

• Remember members cannot be forced to work beyond their time. The key is ABSORPTION not extension.

I got shifted onto another delivery a couple of weeks ago and forgot about 20 houses on my lapsing. The slots for those 20 were on the opposite side of the frame and one row up and since I had never done the delivery before I didn't realise. Anyway, got a phone call about half 11 to ask why I hadn'[t taken it out and was made take it out when I came back. Was also told that it could be seen as wilful delay.

Did you have time inside your contracted hours. to take it out?

No. My lapsing regularly takes me over my hours - not by much, but still over my contracted hours.
