part timers prep check

i think there should be a part timers prep frame check.to see if its done properly ..much the same as the clear frame check at our office everyday ..there are a few good preppers at my office .but i never know what im gonna walk into most days ..even on light days their can piles of mail awaiting ..and everyone gone early

Being asked to prep mail is a "reasonable request" but then you can reasonably request "what to I do now" when your still throwing off the walk at 11am.

Refusal to carry out a reasonable instruction is a dismissable offence.

Prepping a duty, throwing off D2Ds are all part of a postman's workload. Unless your contract of employment specifically exempts you from these activities then you would have to carry them out or accept the consequences of your actions.

As many have repeatedly pointed out, you work to your contracted hours. If the workload is too great to be completed in the time allocated, then that is your manager's job to resolve. If he offers you the overtime, you are perfectly within your rights to decline the offer should you so wish.

Do you know that is something I was pondering yesterday whilst stuck on a motorway for several hours.

I have been a postman for more than 20 years. When I began I considered it an imperative to deliver all the mail every day however long or short a time that took but that only lasted as long as the 5 day week, the SDD and the poor return on overtime - then I would work only to my time and do only what I had to do and I can fully understand how part time postpeople have the attitude that they do.

The delivery for a part timer should be prepared because that is why their contract is for 25 hours HOWEVER when they arrive in the office often at 9 am there has been nothing thrown off and can take them 2 hours to throw it off and prep it and then they are expected to deliver it AND take part of a lapsed duty - now to me that is totally unfair and should be stamped on by the unit rep - it causes some considerable stress to part timers, especially new ones because they are expected to carry out all the tasks of a full timer on a part time contract and don't feel as though they can refuse.

Managers are being allowed to take advantage of part time staff.

I agree with you Dvb but surely it is the fact that they are expected to deliver it despite the fact that they do not have enough time inside their contracted hours that is the problem and not the fact that they have to prep it first.
From a reps point of view it is very difficult to argue which type of work an OPG can and cannot perform and much easier to argue that they have insufficient time to complete the task.
I understand it can be stressful but if given enough support by the rep and their colleagues,which in the main does happen in our office no-one should feel that they cannot refuse.
I am aware however that i only have experience of my own office and some of the offices on here do not sound like the kind of place i would want to work.
