Collection point volume counts

Audience: postmen and women on collections

Background
• Over the next few weeks we need to gather data on the amount of mail collected from all of the collection points on your route.
• This includes mail from Postboxes, Business customers and Post Office counters.
• You will need to count the amount of mail you collect.
• The data will be used to assist with national and local planning activity.
• We will need to start counting immediately to complete by 3 September 2010.

Key messages
[Note to managers: please run through the process for counting with your people]
• Mail from each collection point will be recorded on [Managers: please state which day they will be recording volumes].
• I will give you a route card that lists your collection points for you to record volumes against. These must be handed back to me at the end of your duty.
• Low volumes of mail from Postboxes can be counted as the total individual items.
• Higher volumes of mail from Postboxes can be estimated to the nearest five or based on a “red bag” volume.
• For business and Post Office counter mail the number of trays or bags and their fill level need to be counted.
• I have a guide for you on fill levels [Managers: please share the A4 handout].

Please find attached information received from Royal Mail regarding Collection Point Volume Counts. Unfortunately this was received very late and the point has been made to Royal Mail, however we would appreciate all units cooperating with this exercise. We would also suggest that the collection point volumes are shared with the CWU in the spirit of the BT 2010 and Beyond Agreement.

BD, we had this exercise down our way 2-3 weeks ago, they wanted to sample on a Tue
we said NO and it was changed to a Thur, still dont know the outcome

The big new UK central collection box will be located in Leicester Square and collections will be made at 12;00 and 16;00 daily,except Sundays

I've got to hold my hand up here,i do a collection on a Sat,i used to get near enough a bag full,say 2 bags if it was done on a proper weight,now it's less than a quarter full!

I concur. I think we should all be allowed to take paid time off until the market picks up.

some units still operate a wave 1 09.00am, wave 2 12.00pm, wave 3 15.00pm, wave 4 17.00pm & wave 5 19.00pm collections.
I theory main boxes outside TSO's should be done with the TSO at 12.00, 15.00 & 17.00 and stick boxes should only be done at 17.00.
Royal Mail need to use the rest of the time taken to enable us poor old posties to tray/purstop all the collection letter mail we collect from boxes and customers so that mail can be easerly stacked into york container when arriving at mail centres
