Dear Colleague

Simplified Packet Sortation Deployment Guidelines

Branches will be aware discussions have been taking place with the business at National Level regarding the above as a result of the Simplified Packet Sortation trial that took place in Southampton Mail Centre. The business are investing £4.8 million in this project which is designed to make the operation safer and improve efficiency.

Please find attached the National Deployment Guidelines and Simplified Packet Sortation Toolkit which will assist Representatives in dealing with the roll out of this initiative. The Guidelines ensure CWU Representatives will be fully involved in all aspects of this initiative and any issues should be dealt with in line with the Industrial Relations Framework Agreement.

The roll out will be on a phased basis with Phase One commencing on the 22nd August 2010 and Phases 2 and 3 being completed by the first week of November 2010. The roll out plans for each Mail Centre can be found at Annex 1 of the Deployment Guidelines.

I hope they are going to put enough red sleeves into the system as I guess that apart from selections that go via skynet the dbfs will get removed. I wouldn't be surprised if some MCs end up having to send cardboard sleeves through the network.

Royal mail has bought 95,000 red sleeves and all cardboard sleeves will be removed from service

As a DO postie that has to unload them this is great news. The cardboard ones are a PIA to unload, and IMHO not very safe especially if all the MC does is throw the stuff in rather than stacking the packets.

A few mail centres will be starting earlier to do a sort of trial run of the new system,Greenford starts next week.

I wonder what RM's backup plan is when we run out of sleeves and neither inward or outward mail gets sent out. The dbf will probably get cut up the same week that everything goes into sleeves.
