hello
i have one coming up and just want to know is their a difference in what the union can do and what the colleague can do in terms of representation. Not sure who to take with me. If i take a colleague i don't whant them to think oh thats his mate stuff like that...

Personal Opinion - Always take an experienced Rep in instead of a colleague, no matter how good a mate they are. An ex rep would be my second choice, a mate with long service 3rd last choice would be a gobby barrack room lawyer who thinks he knows it all.
The rep cannot do any more than a mate in one of these interviews, but they do have some official guidance on how they can represent you, and they also have the backing of the CWU as a whole.
If the decision goes against you and they have been in since the start they can advise you better on what your options are.
In the worst case if they decision is unjust and you need the backing of your colleagues a good rep is more likely to get official sanction for that, than even the best mate in the world.

A good Rep who has had some training will know more about RM rules than most managers,
and may well be able to get case dropped on 'technicalities', if correct procedures have not
been followed. A mate may not have this knowledge.

Mates are ok but sometimes when sat in front of a senior manager then can go quiet. A rep is your best bet they should have had the training and experiance to handle cases. Plus if they get on with the manager they can influnence the outcome, they may know of similar cases and penalties. One old trick of a rep is to get the charge if seriuos down graded to a lesser one. Thanks for the replies guys, I did in the end go with a union rep. The interview was pretty straight forward .
Does anyone know how long they have to reply to me and tell me the outcome, is their a time limit because i still have not heard anything and its almost a month.
