Taking break and cutting off
Does anyone do this just now?
Leave their delivery mid shift to take their break?
Due to my daughter starting nursery soon, I will have to collect her from Grandmothers and take her across at 12.30
I suspect for some reason ore another, my DOM will have an issue with this.
Any advice appreciated.

Can't see anything wrong with this ghost, you will need to ensure special deliveries are either kept on your person or completed as you can't lock them in pouch boxes or personal vehicles!
Apart from that does your DOM even need to know as long as you don't exceed your 40 minute break (30 if PT)

What's this??
Sometimes we are waiting on the mis-sorts at our DO and are told to take our break. The only problem is that this can be as little as 30/40 minutes after we start our shift so we won't get a chance later in the day.
That would cause problems......

Re: Taking break and cutting off
Are you asking to take your break when it suits you AND 'cut off' as in not finish your delivery?
Or do you mean take your break when it suits you to organise your family then return to duty to finish it off?
Would you do this every day off the week and how long would it take?
How do you intend to 'collect and deliver' ? Do you have a Royal Mail tandem or will you be using your own car?
How many of your colleagues would support your decision to do such a thing?

By the way, a family friendly form is a P45. Get one and get another job so your family fit round your work and not the other way around.

It's good to get these types of threads, the ridiculous my manager said bollox, so we can reassure ourselves that while the world is falling apart, Royal Mail managers are still being the low-life C***S they have always been.

The daily grind of having to argue your case with an intellectual pigmy of a line manager is physically and emotionally draining.

Re: Taking break and cutting off
As far as i know they cant make you take a break so early , i think if you are full time you can have it after 5 hours, also you can have a meal relief away from your work premises. If i am wrong i think someone else will advise you...postghost wrote:woofwoof wrote:get a family friendly form in now

Re: Taking break and cutting off
Yes, when it suits me (given there is no set in stone agenda for breaks in our office)smelly_cat_lady wrote:Are you asking to take your break when it suits you AND 'cut off' as in not finish your delivery?
I will return to complete my delivery always once my daughter is safely and securely at nursery.
Yes.smelly_cat_lady wrote: Or do you mean take your break when it suits you to organise your family then return to duty to finish it off?
No. 30 minutessmelly_cat_lady wrote: Would you do this every day off the week and how long would it take?
Using my own vehicle that I will have stationed on my delivery beforehand for the purpose of collecting and dropping off my daughter.smelly_cat_lady wrote: How do you intend to 'collect and deliver' ? Do you have a Royal Mail tandem or will you be using your own car?
I don't know and I don't care. They do things I do not approve of. I let them get on with it though.smelly_cat_lady wrote: How many of your colleagues would support your decision to do such a thing?

You are clearly looking to jump on the antagonist train at any opportunity these days. Clearly seeking some kind of response or conflict??smelly_cat_lady wrote: By the way, a family friendly form is a P45. Get one and get another job so your family fit round your work and not the other way around.
Why should I have to get another job??
I am entitled to a 30 minute break within my duty time. All I am stating is that it will now benefit me to take that break in the confines of said time as opposed to taking it at the end of my shift or putting it in as O/T
Postman, I am p/t contracted at 25 hours start time is 8.30

You are contracted to work for Royal Mail from 8-30 till 1-30,you now have a situation where in the real world you can't pick up your daughter ect.Postman, I am p/t contracted at 25 hours start time is 8.30
But this is Royal Mail and there are no doubt many instances where peeps have broken off from their deliver to 'do something' and finish off the round later.
It does not matter if your DOM forces you to have your meal break at a specific time as you could always 'sneak off' and take your daughter to school then carry on.
You will at times have to work past 1-30 if you have already had your break and you have to suck that up.
Some managers wouldn't have a problem as long as the job gets done.

Yes she was harsh, but there seems to be (although not postghosts one) members throwing a strop because they have to work to their time and feel aggrevied by it as it effects their day.Straight4ward wrote:You're an Agony Aunt really, aren't you. At the end of the day the early aways are getting less and less,if it now effects people and they already arrange stuff in their 'contracted hrs of work' then tbf it's tough.

Re: Taking break and cutting off
Correct - An employer can tell you when to take your break as long as it somewhere in the middle of the working day.ashadd wrote:As far as i know they cant make you take a break so early , i think if you are full time you can have it after 5 hours, also you can have a meal relief away from your work premises. Also for Postghost - while they can tell you when to take your break, they cant tell you where.

Rest breaks - a break during your working day
As an adult worker (over 18), you will normally have the right to a 20 minute rest break if you are expected to work more than six hours at a stretch.
A lunch or coffee break can count as your rest break. Additional breaks might be given by your contract of employment. There is no statutory right to 'smoking breaks'.
The requirements are:
the break must be in one block
it cannot be taken off one end of the working day - it must be somewhere in the middle
you are allowed to spend it away from the place on your employer's premises where you work
your employer can say when the break must be taken, as long as it meets these conditions
