Senority holds the field...So the senior man gets one the first pick...Last man in gets the last duty (probably a floater ) ....That is the agreement ...You cant have a situation where the senior man gets the first pick and chooses somebody as his running mate ( it could be the new bloke in the office, which could be his best mate ,relative etc ). That is utter nonsense...

Also certain duties would need to be held back for DDA cases etc....

We don't have van sharing yet but I would have thought it should be pre-determined which walks will be paired before the sign up so that each walk is paired with a neighbouring one in order to maximise efficiency. Otherwise you would end up with senior guys pairing up with each other and choosing walks miles apart.

Er...not quite

The following principles should be applied to your re-pick:

1. Staff will need to be trained on the equipment they will be using
2. Duties should be divided between driving and non-driving duties
3. People covered by DDA need to be offered suitable duties as a priority in the process re-pick
4. Driving duties will be restricted to existing and volunteer new drivers and non-driving duties will be restricted to non-drivers
5. A driver is needed for every shared van pair. Only one non-driver can pick into a shared van duty pair
6. Shared van partners without driving licences should be restricted to 50% or less of the total number of shared van partners. The exact ratio will be determined by you, but the balance you must strike is between creating a duty set:
a. With enough options to match your peoples’ skills
b. With enough flexibility to give you adequate cover in cases of people failure and unplanned absence
In the example duty detail display this is - 13 Shared vans, 6 non drivers (App 2)
7. The non-driving duties can be allocated to any of the shared vans, up to the agreed ratio
8. The cover and the leave reserve duties for the shared vans must be drivers to ensure that the van can be taken out each day

It's seniority Jim but not as we know it. :chuckle
How exactly do you ensure that all cover and the leave reserve duties for the shared vans are drivers without bypassing seniority? :hmmmm :d'oh!

My idea is this. Let management sort it, by telling you lot to sort it, management are ensuring that when the inevitable balls-up occurs, it'll be those who were told to sort it, that get's it in the neck.
Management want park and poop, let them organise park and poop.

The van share duties should be set up as the van share duties ie. duties 1 & 2 are designed to be shared because they are beside each other and they run easliy onto each other and when these duties come up to be signed for after the revision those people choose these duties.

I'll think about this and make it clearer in a while (after dinner  ).

This is the way i see it done best and makes most sense to me.

If they do it, then they`ll feck it up gauranteed - at least if we do it we have a chance
And management get the backslaps, not to mention the handsome bonuses, and you get feck all.
Let them f**k it up, let it fail.

Park and loop was never designed to be done by just bolting two duties together even the CWU in it's wisdom realised that....
Further to that, some of the reports we are receiving indicate an approach which is at complete odds to the position taken by Royal Mail during our negotiations.

We have had reports of existing walks bolted together and a van supplied. In some cases the loops are pretty much the whole walk and the van effectively becomes a pouch box on wheels. This is clearly unacceptable. To use this method properly requires an element of detailed planning especially on the loops to be employed. The whole purpose of shared vans is to reduce weight over the shoulder and loops should be as short as reasonably possible.
The loops and the duties will probably bear little resemblance to the duties you have now.
As far as two senior guys picking a pair together...it aint gonna happen....unless one of them is a non-driver or you have very few non-drivers in your office. :hmmmm

It's good to get these types of threads, the ridiculous my manager said bollox, so we can reassure ourselves that while the world is falling apart, Royal Mail managers are still being the low-life C***S they have always been.

Heres how its going at my office.

1) Staff will be able to choose a partner BEFORE the repick. Anyone who cant be paired by consent will rely on their own seniority.

2) This hasnt been fully decided but either i) You add the seniority of the 2 duty holders together and divide by 2 to get overall seniority or ii) the most senior duty holder gets to pick the duty with the 2nd individual taking the other (some staff dont see why 20+ years should be split just because they want a newie as a buddy)

3) Once this has been decided its down to a traditional repick using the fugures from the above system.

Pros and cons?

No joke.

Union rep has come from another office and taken ex rep to do the revision.

This is one of the ideas they have for the repick.

Loads of people are moaning about being stuck with one of the many twats at my office so they need a system to nullify this threat.

One important point fishtank brought out was no two duties should be bolted together but a P&L delivery should be designed specifically for that purpose and that IS good advice.

I can understand that to a certain extent pick but you can't just make up the rules on seniority as you go along.
At some point in this "idea" someone is going to get f**ked over and they will be straight on the phone to the area rep asking why the proper seniority rules were not followed.
Your DOM will also not be best pleased if the pairs are both drivers and he is stuck with non-drivers as cover and leave reserves for the park&loop duties.
I hope these guys have some other ideas up their sleeves. :nervous :nervous
