Lieu day refused. Can I take unpaid leave??

Had a lieu day refused, just a single day, Saturday in about 6 weeks time. Could I just take unpaid leave for that day??? Cos I ain't gonna be going in, made plans for travel, accommodation etc so they can like it or lump it.

Gets on my nerves that some people get all days off they want and others get none.

So anyway, can I do it and would I face any disciplinary procedure for it??

Can't you pay one of your workmates to do a cash cover? Would seem like the easiest option if your office allows that?

This one day off business is bollox ffs.

You could ask to take it unpaid can't see why they would refuse it,you could also ask to work a rest day and bank it,they might go for that.

It's comedy in our office, people are getting lieu days for 6-7 months in advance turned down. A lot of people don't bother asking now and just knock instead.

Er, well I get on well with the Dom, do collapsing on other walks regularly and don't cause any trouble but I won't bend over backwards for him ! Lieu days are our holiday entitlements, simple as that!

Would try and get a swap of rest day with workmate or as someone has said see if anybody would do the Saturday for you for cash in hand first.
Now Dom knows you want that day off you will be taking a risk by phoning in sick.
But in reality you have given Dom sufficient notice and really something should be able to be sorted out between you.

The leave system that we have to suffer is a disgrace.

I wanted to use my leave to book off as many saturdays as possible but was told that I couldn't.

Why not? It's my leave!

OP - Don't go sick, they know you wanted the day off so they'll do you for it.

thanks for all replies so far, cant do the day off swap as i'm already doing that to have friday off, and wanted saturday off as a lieu.

not sure about the paying someone, think ive tried that in the past and the dom said it wasnt an option as they still couldnt allow me to be off .

gonna speak to union rep tomorrow and get his views on it.

If all else fails use the childcare card, tell em you can't get cover or you have to look after a grandchild/niece/nephew.............worth a try matey!!! :)

i think he said it was down to the number of people being on IPS being reduced if i was off.

What if I need a Saturday off next spring for a close relatives wedding, that week is already booked and there's no chance of swapping a day off, would a days unpaid leave be appropriate and if so would it readily be granted, especially if it was the first such request from me in several years ?

If the reason you can't take it as paid leave is that it would leave the office short, asking for it as unpaid leave is going to make no difference, it's still a job that needs covering.

Have you tried getting someone to work the day for you with you giving them a day back later (in the P&M agreement so DOM shouldn't be able to say no)?

I would say yes,but what makes you think they would invite 'you'.
