left a packet in van

i was called into the managers office this morning because the day before, after my duty a letter and a packet from my round were found inside.
i admit i was abit careless, i shouldve checked van better,and this is not the 1st time this has happened.
my union rep was not in so i had to do a fact finding interview on my own with manager. (could i have refused without a rep?)

i basically said i usually check the van is empty, and that i must have just missed the letter and packet.

cant really remember much of what he said , i was just panicking inside but he did say that its very serious.

will tell rep on friday about this,or should i phone him now?

manager also said this will now affect me getting a transfer and no one will even look at my application now.

yes, very serious.

you would have signed the security of the mail brief (after reading it!?)

virtually every person i know who has done this has been dismissed.
the only thing that could save you would probably be that the items were p739's - and even that's a bit iffy.

You could have insisted a rep or colleague was present its a legal right for any disciplinary interview, or even one that can lead to a disciplinary case.

. It is and if you did say that then you have not really helped yourself as this could be seen as an admission of guilt.

Yes - as soon as possible.

I think he is right you cant transfer with a disciplinary case outstanding.

Aren't you meant to get a letter given to you giving you 24 hours notice (so you can sort out union rep or someone) before you attend any fact finding interview?

And it is virtually guaranteed your manager will milk it for all its worth. Where these fact finding interviews take place and they then appear to digress into a disciplinary hearing then you quite rightly are entitled to union representation providing you are a member. Perhaps and in hindsight you should have called a halt to this managerial meeting when your manager intimated that it was serious.

Just think to yourself how often on a daily or weekly basis has you manager left mail lying in the office which is supposedly due for delivery that day. One rule for them and another for us. Best to contact your rep a.s.p. and get them up to speed on the situation.

my first answer would have been you sure its me might have been floater did you check the date stamp etc always beats them cos they havent a clue put the doubt back on them and let them prove it how do you know mgmt didn,t put it there ,who found it did they do it list is endless . deny and plead ignorance

Until you can discuss with your rep, and if you are friendly with your workmates;
ask if anyone has done it before and been let off/had a light punishment. (set a precedent).

Also think of any mitigating circumstances that made you lose concentration. (home life/worry over job/manager distracted you/someone asked you to hurry up and park), just to make it look more like a one off, depite what you said before. Good luck.

Has your manager suspended you from duty?

this will be a good indication of how serious a charge you are facing

You have a good challenge in the DOM telling you that you won't get a transfer.

You are only inelligible for a transfer if you have a current conduct warning.
If he's telling you that you now can't transfer, he's obviously made his mind up not only that you have done wrong, but also what the penalty should be, and all of this before he's formally interviewed you and heard your mitigation.

Pre-judging the outcome like this would be good grounds for appeal against any decision he may later apply.

God i must be in a good office.

We have had 4,5 maybe more cases like that in my Office. We are normally told to take more care and not to do it again.
We have also had dickheads that have docketed specials or recordeds, Taken then home after thier duty and forgot to bring them back in the nextday FFS.
Yes, I know they should'nt but you can only tell someone they are an arsehole for doing it so many times before you just walk away and leave them to thier own devices.

It amazes me the amount of people who get some gratification when they do this. "Boss, boss I found this in the van just now..." I just hope that this person is happy with their snitching ways now and hope that they too are sooo perfect that they will never cock up and make a mistake.
I always say though that if you do get someone out of the sh*t one time, you make a point of telling them and letting them know it. A simple thank you suffices and also makes them aware that you're watching one anothers backs. Christ knows we have enough managers out there let alone some snivelling brown nose 'fellow workers' working one up you too.

Considering the general lack of training endemic for new starters its a miracle more mistakes are not made...The blame culture is beyond belief. Spot on, this is your best defense. Are you stressed, family troubles, money worries, next door neighbours dog just died, anything will do?
