I've used it for unexpected child care, i.e. child up all night vomiting and can't get a baby sitter or other for next day in time.
You basically get the day off without pay to look after a child but you are expected to arrange alternative child care if several days are required.
Had no problems with it, impartial contact with line managers when phoning in and no repercussions when returning to work. Altogether a good thing to have really.

I had to use it twice in a fortnight due to my son being rather ill(life and death situation). Second time a manager threatened to mark me as being sick for taking him to the doctor. Luckily it was said in front of the union rep. If it's something that's needed don't let managers bully you about it.
