Collaboration With Doms

Post by Exrep »

Today i found myself apologising to the members of staff i represent in my office why ?

Firstly i had to represent a lad whos performance wasnt up to scratch in the DIMS eyes ( not prepping enough in his fitting) I asked if procedures had been followed and the DIM explained to me that they hadnt so in a polite manner i told him to go jump.

After the meeting DIM pulls me to one side and said that under the new agreement performance standards are something R/M are going to get on top of .He then mentioned my area rep and said that if he was representing a postie he would have asked the DIM, to leave his office and he would have told the person in question that there prep of 7.9 in a minute was shite. Were i come from we have an agreed figure that was thrashed out with the area rep and SOM of 12 a minute.

DIM then has his team cuddle as he finishes i asked him if i could speak to the staff to explain what the agreed figure in our area is and what was in the new agreement with regards to performance just so everyones aware before someone gets taken down the conduct code. Any hows said my piece and feck me did i sound like a DIM so i apologised to all the staff TBH it was rather embarrassing not that i have a problem speaking in front of a group of people .I also explained to them that i myself am struggling with the new agreement on how R/M and the CWU work together hopefully the chaps in my office will understand my point.

Have the CWU lost all grasps and concept of what its like working on the shop floor ,its only today that i realised how wrong this agreement is and the position the CWU have put all reps in .Fair dos if your a rep thats after glory and to be in the lime light all the time and you wont to be a oneaby DIM then it will suit you well, but if like me you see yourself as no different to the lads you represent thenyou too will struggle with this agreement.

As soon as our office has had its delivery methods revision im packing in the reps position and i very much doubt anyone in our office will take it on .Reps now are like a puppet sitting on the DIMS knee with his hand up your arse telling you what to say and when to say it. Bring back the good old days of were reps went to war with there DIMS at least then we (i) new were we stood.

So congratulations to the CWU this time you have broken the union not R/M and give it time more and more folk will pull out ,more and more reps will eventually see the light and it will be up to the area reps to sort out all the offices with no reps what a great move bravo take a standing ovation this time you have excelled yourselves selling us all down the river big time.

Any way rant over chaps surely i cant be the only rep that feels this way.

Its not the first time this sort of thing has happened and with RM it wont be the last. I think you've done the best you could with the information at hand.

I said that when I first saw the agreement. Local reps have been hung out to dry.
Yes, we need representation in the workplace, but the price was too high and CWU HQ SHOULD HAVE SEEN AND UNDERSTOOD THAT. Instead they were grateful to pick up the scraps from the table when they should have been demanding the steak.
We were told we were fighting to save the CWU, but who's going to save us from them?

2 local reps resigned because of this type of thing. now all we haave is the area rep.

seems those who are higher up (even a couple of rungs) in the union have no clue what its like at ground level.

i agree monkeyboy at our wtl sessions my name seems to get attached to everything (as union rep) it pisses me off and is very embarrassing. like you im just waiting until the revisions are fairly put in place, then im hanging up my reps/assistant doms jacket.

unfortunately my increasingly jaded view of this union sees too many officials vying for progression and self preservation, regardless of the members needs and they may as well become management because they are just as slimy and underhand.

i think its high time all union officials on full time release were made to do the jobs of the members they represent for at least one month per calender year, so they can keep up to date with whats happening at the coal face, and to the cries of they work hard representing us and need the whole year to work on our behalf well increase the time between elections.

DGP always takes me a little longer than others for the penny to drop.

Guvnor in our area it is agreed 12 letters in a minute i no in other areas its higher .

Pinstripe cant agree more it feels like we've been dumped in a baron land occupied by ravenous dogs and told to make our way home safely, this in my humble opinion is the start to the end for the CWU. Great idea for all high up officals to do what we do every day but were in fantasy land.

Assassin i cant wait for our delivery methods revision to be put in place and the best deal for the lads in the office has been reached so i can jib the CWU i was so on the verge of jibbing it today, but going on past experience it would be a disastrous move for the office as R/M would start playing daft so the sooner the better really.

I think one of the most galling things about this agreement, is that the CWU expects local reps to be managements hatchet men/women.
Our local reps are there to represent the membership, not the CWU or RM! I also think that once a lot of reps have finalised this transition, they will quit, effectively ending union representation in the workplace, and who could blame them? An apathetic membership combined with a deceitful HQ and blamed for everything. Tell me again, how many thousands of pounds extra a year do they earn? What, it's unpaid!
The CWU bigwigs should be ashamed of themselves. I echo the calls for the union leaders, divisional and area reps to hit the streets for a few weeks, with full management bullying included.

Well, it's a little late. The horse has bolted and the stable door is as wide as wide can be. You will soon be told that this agreement was voted in by you, exactly the same as last time, and that it is, collectively, all your fault. You may even be advised to "grow a pair" and that really is the icing on the cake, because there is a blatant admittance that there will be "winners and losers" - that statement alone should have rung alarm bells.

Still that's water under the bridge and as quoted by some "that's the agreement, live with it" - those I may add who AREN'T having to live with it.

MonkeyBoy;

Whilst I might not agree with everthing you say; don't give up. You are obviously passionate about what you believe.

From what I can see the Reps job is a battle. Not only with the Management but from the members. It's not a job that many will do.

Reflect. And bloody well stick with it.

What many area and divisional reps and most at HQ fail to realise is that a union is not a business and the higher up you go in a union the less important you become to the general membership.
Not all area and divisional reps are poor but enough are and the systems in place to remove poor reps at any level above local requires a fair degree of organisation and cooperation from the very people who are close to if not drinking buddies with the rep you are trying to remove.
Maybe it's time for a fixed term of office for "full-time release" reps and maybe we will encourage some new blood with new ideas.
Maybe 2 years and if your good enough you move up and if your not....back to the floor.
Some area reps have been sitting treading water for 10years plus.
good times, bad times you know I've had my share
