being a rep

Have been approached to become our union rep for my office as we havnt had one for about 2 years ,with all the changes that are going to happen i might do it .Havnt got a clue what it involves so any advice would be appreciated ,also whats the training involved
only going to do it so we dont get stitched up.

I'm the same just signed up, but guess what i still aint got a clue cos management keep cancelling meetings and i have not had one word from CWU yet regarding anything...

the way i see it is they (CWU) think their doing me a favour and i should be running rings to find out whats happening...thats not going to happen ive got a life outside work and i intend to keep it that way....and as soon as i start getting s**t flung at me i'll drop the position like a hot potaty...

I had the flyers bitching to me as soon as my name went on the board as rep, fuckn unbelieveble

I had a week on the sick about 2 months ago, Sill have not had back to work discussion.....

Could i deny i was ever off in the first place and what proof do they have that i was?

I'm not sure what area you live in, but the TUC will run courses through a local college, Stage 1 then Stage 2, these are both 10 weeks long which is 1 day per week or 2 5 day courses, YOU WILL be allowed time off for to attend these and its fully paid time off incase the DIM tries to be smart.

If possible don't do the online course,do the college based one, the interaction from other reps is brilliant and you'll learn a lot of things from them as well as the course tutor.

Nice one.... err mate, at least im having a go, and btw i intend to lead by example doing the job right working ALL my hours and not running round like a tvvat (any reps doing that dya think Tony) and questioning everything management try to chuck at us unlike previous reps who were nowt but pussys and where and still are out for themselves...

so thanks for your advice i'll take it on board and totally f***ing ignore it

As someone who's done a reps job before the best thing to do is get to know your area rep well , its a thankless task but at least you have the balls to have ago. Don't worry too much about the details of every deal ever signed by the CWU/RM as you'll find out most DIMs don't know them either. Get yourself on as many courses as you can. Find the staff you can trust and the ones you can't and then work on the middle ground.

Your reply to me is the way to be a good rep, I was referring two your two previous post's, if your telling me as a postie in a office, and your rep came out with the statements that you made, would you have any faith in him/her? good luck in the role, but if your going too do as you say.
