I was approached by the cwu rep today with regard to joining. I said I'd have a think and get back.
I'd appreciate any opinion either for or against joining. On particular as I'm on a 3 month contract, which I'm obviously hoping is extended, will joining the union go down badly with the DOM?

it wont make a difference to your contract renewal

you would be better off keeping the 3 quid in your pocket.

It's funny our union rep this morning was arguing with dom about something. Next thing they go to office then come out all smiles. We just found out rep is now off saturday......

It really depends on your office, do you have a divided workplace? Find out how many are in the union first, it may go down badly if you join as you're on a 3 month contract - I would wait until you're contract is extended or you are made permenant before making up your mind.

The union reps have been told to sign up as many men, women, dogs, in fact anyone who enters RM premises. This is in a bid to make the number of members look good, as so many have left in disgust at the latest deal(?). Do as others have suggested - wait until you're properly signed up, and save that £3.

Please don't be bothered about what the DOM thinks of you, besides, its none of his business whether or not you are in the union. If you're that bothered why not ask him if he belongs to his union and ask him the reasons why/why not? You're a big boy now, please make up your own mind. For what its worth (£3) its money well spent

You have to weigh the benefits against cost, if you are in the right and managers try to walk all over you, the Union will step in.

If you are not in the union the management wont TRY to walk all over you......they WILL walk all over you

Oh and if you are part time..like everything else ...contributions are pro rata.... so it's even more worth it

Cheers for the replies. I have a fair but to consider. Smelly lady, yes I am a big boy now but have never worked in an environment that had the option of union membership. I did however sai for advice not for someone to decide for me.

If you join the union you will have a better chance of staying on after your 3 month contract as every office will be getting revisons over the next few months.

If your in the union your rep should fight your case if your not then you are just one indivdual within a large organisation and Royal Mail dont listen to indivduals in the main.

spot on dingo,individuals not in the union come under more pressure from gaffers whenever there's a problem usually which they have created.

Arty - I'm glad that you are a 'BIG' boy now

Just think of the tradition and history of being part of a union and what it stands for. Yes we whinge and gripe about it and yes there are what appears to be some dodgy deals but its a fine institution and if you're ever in trouble (or fake trouble fabricated by management) they will do everything they can to help you. Have you made up your mind yet?

I'm sure the union will stand up for you if you are unfairly treated or discriminated against, but it won't stop the manager from not renewing your contract after 3 months if he decides to. Hard work has and always will ensure the greatest job security. I'm not saying don't join the union - that's up to you, but in any job especially a temporary one, you need to be cautious - get your feet firmly through the door before settling in. Remember Royal Mail has procedures in place to ensure you are treated fairly, but the reality is, he doesn't need a reason to get rid of you after 3 months.

it takes the pISS when we are told there is to be another revision in the next couple of months here on this site
and yet we are still waiting in our office to be told by our rep about 2010 and beyond agreement i kid you not.shambolic

I know this is a bit of a topic hijack but I was wondering why a figure of £3 is being bandied around?

When I joined the union, I had to telephone to ask how much I had to pay, (it was requested on the application form). The person didn't know, went off to ask someone and eventually came back with a reply. I used that figure and other than the rises we've all seen, it's nowhere near £3.
