Started at RM straight after my A levels and now, 3 years on, have decided to take the plunge and go to university. Things in my office are getting worse and worse by the day and to be honest ive had enough. I cant see me being physically able to do this job for the next 30 years tbh, my knees and back feel 20 years older than I am as it is!
Has anyone on here whos been to university been able to juggle a part time job while studying? If I did work I would probably just be looking to do Saturday mornings with the odd weekday when I can.
Ive had an unconditional offer from Plymouth uni, just curious if anyone who works in that area has any idea of the situation down there, any vacancies etc.

Thought I would float it on here before asking the boss, see if I can get a bullshit-free answer for once. bet he cant wait to see the back of me to be honest, 30 hours a week off the wage bill after all.

Good luck. I had a part time job while studying at uni 20 odd years ago (worked two nights a week in a pizzeria), but I still ended up at the dreaded RM. Still, I wouldn't let that discourage you - any chance of getting something better than this job has got to be worth taking.

i dropped out of my 1st year and ended up at RM
ive applied for a credit for entry course(been too long since i dropped out to go straight back)
so if i get the place on that i would hopefully get a place for next year

this s**t deal could work out.its possible there could be PT saturday duties to cover this stoopid extra saturdays off plan

Plymouth is probably the worst place to work if you're feeling old now, all hills and steps. The walks seem to be a lot shorter compared to the experiences described on here, as a consequence though, so plenty of time for studying. I can easily finish my current walk in two hours and most others in 2.5. How long can that go on for though?

There never seems to be any vacancies on the RM website but there appears to be a regular turnover so you could be in luck.

If you can type you could also try applying to Plymouth MDEC.
From what some of the MDEC keyers on here have said there are a number of students who work part-time there.

You wont get through Uni WITHOUT a part time job.

I left uni 10 years ago, when there were no tuition fees and I got a partial grant and i still had to work 2 pt jobs to pay the rent. I had 3 pt jobs when i did an MA the year after leaving as there was no funding.

All students have to work these days. If you want a 2:1 youre going to have to work hard and have discipline.

It wont do you any good though. A degree isnt worth anything anymore if youre honest with yourself.

Good way to get out of this crap job if nothing else.

Have you considered the Open University?
These days, you have to be wealthy to get a Degree, without ending up with huge debts by the end of it. And a Part Time job, might not be enough to avoid it.

It takes longer to get your Degree with OU, because you work at your own pace, when you have time. But at least you won't have major debts to deal with, when you graduate.

It was bad enough when I went. But at least I got a lot of financial support from my Parents. I was one of the few, who didn't have big Student Loans to pay off at the end.

Go for it, study hard to improve your future. RM in decline and savings will be needed every year with little to look forward to but harder work.
You will improve your chances for better earnings over your working life .Good Luck.

I was reading this thinking "I don't remember asking this question?!"...

I'm due to start studying with the OU in October and I'll be juggling more than part time study with a more than part time job. Can't afford not to! I, however, finished my 'A' Levels in 1999 so I've been out of the studying game for a lot longer.

I'm in my Thirties and i've completed 2 years of my Accounting course, only 1 year more to go. I took a career break 1 year and i'm now comteplating my next step, but one thing is for certain i'll probably have to leave the job. I'm happy but sad too, 14 years in the job, i';ve seen the ups and downs (more downs recently). I'm actually enjoying the job again, wonder why???
It may not be the best timing for changing a career but can't see me up and down stairs etc for another 20+ years. Plus i won't be able to live on crap part-time wages which is coming RM way.
