Driving advice Please

Post by music4essex »

Hello and good afternoon

I had one of our drivers come up to me this morning and he asked me a question to put on here,

Our lino and dom gave to each driver a letter which they had to sign they had read it, on it was that if they had an accidednt in a RM van while on duty then they would have to contact their own car insurance to say that they have had an accident,

Is this correct ? also what happens if they are only on the wifes car insurance as a named driver?

Thanks in advance

I know you are meant to advise the Insurance company of any vehicle accidents where you were the driver when you renew your insurance, or take out a new policy, as failure to do so will invalidate the cover. However, I have no idea if you have to report an accident to them immediately when their policy will not be invoked.

Hopefully someone will know for definite.

Im almost sure this is the case if you have an accident in another vehicle you have access to, you must contact and inform your own insurance.

Haven't heard about having to sign a letter,
But I am aware of it being my responsibility to inform my insurers if I have a prang while driving a Royal Mail vehicle, otherwise my insurers could say my own policy is null and void as I hadn't disclosed any previous accidents.

And what if you don't have any car insurance because you can't afford a car on Royal Mail wages ? :Very Happy

You are only signing the letter to confirm you have read and understood the letter. I think this is to keep RM safe from any driver dragging RM into court if the drivers own insurance refuses to honour their cover due to the driver having had an accident in another vehicle and not reporting it and then having an accident in their own vehicle.
If you are on your wife's insurance then you should still notify them that you have been in an accident.
I would say that you should wait until you are found to blame or not to blame before notifying as they each will have different consequences. Not blameworthy should'nt change your insurance whereas if you are found blameworthy then it could affect your payments.

you do have to disclose any accidents to your insurers, but only at the time of renewal - it doesn't affect your policy mid-term

If I had an accident in a RM vehicle, I'd inform my insurers straight away.

Insurers find anyway they can to not pay out. If they find out you've had an accident and not told them, they can refuse to indemnify you.

Better safe than sorry...

Inform your insurance straight away. I recently had a knock in a RM van and my own insurance jumped £40 as a result of it. The part I damaged on the car cost less than £20 to replace so I would have been better off leaving my own contact details and paying up myself, avoiding insurance claims.

Not sure if this is a daft question, but....

I apologise in advance if this is a daft question, but: If you have to inform your own Insurer, if you make a claim on RM's insurance (which therefore doesn't effect your insurer financially). Then wouldn't you also have to inform them if you've had an accident, and paid for the damage yourself? :confused
If not. Then why not?

technically yes
you are informing the insurer you had an accident
this puts you as a higher risk
doesnt matter if the insurer paid out or not

This seems ridiculous because if I pranged my own car, which is under third party insurance, then I fixed it at my cost, why for the life of me would I then tell my insurance so that they could increase my premiums?
