What do you get with the basic uniform?
Just wondering because I thought you'd get a cap and shorts for this warm weather but the woman on the phone never said anything about them.

Re: What do you get with the basic uniform?
You'll get a stormproof (excuse me while I have a laughing fit) coat where the only waterproof part is the inside of the pockets (they hold the water really well... perhaps they should make the whole coat out of the pocket lining?!) and some shirts and hi viz vest.
I didn't get any shoes until after my probation period was finished and the same for the rest.
You can ask your DOM for a hat of some sort, seeing as it's meant to be a hot summer, as it's RM advice to wear a hat in sunny weather. If they say no then I'd kick off.

FFS don't wear the stormcoat at all, I stll have the original one was issued many years ago (the one with the lining) only because I can't wear the thing. Shorts, hats, and basically anything that's useful won't be issued to you until hell freezes over (and then only if your DOM authorises it
).

The 'many years ago' is the important part. Order a new one, they're much better now.DGP1 wrote:FFS don't wear the stormcoat at all, I stll have the original one was issued many years ago (the one with the lining) only because I can't wear the thing. Re: What do you get with the basic uniform?
Pissed off and shat on...viz,
1:trousers that contribute to nappy rash, appear to be measured by a tailor off his head on LSD, have long term wear resitance of tissue paper and fade like a mother in blotches.
2: hi-viz vests that retain body heat in summer, but do bugger all else any other time.
3: shoes that might have some traction, or fit comfortably, or not cause blisters on your soles, or support your feet, or not rub your heels raw weeks after you thought you'd broken them in....but never more than one at one time.
4: storm coats that need minus tempetures or monsoons to not leave you wetter on the inside than the outside...even if they don't leak in the first place.
5: Fleeces that have zips that break within minutes of exposure to natural lighting, and stitching that unravels within seconds of exposure to tube lighting, and made of material that is miraculously too warm after the spring equinox, and too cold after the autumnal equinox...although my 3 year old one works a treat over my bike jacket, and the quality is so crap I don't care if I fall off & wreck it....I'd not want to fall off & wreck my bike though
6: warm and heavyweight polycotton polo shirts with no pockets - not even for a pen, although there is a tab for badges, the issue of which were stopped months after the polos started to be issued, or blue shirts that do have decent pockets, but variable shades of blue, ( in year by year comparisons ) and genrally poor colour retention or stain removal over time & use, and if you sweat, it really shows up.
7: crap range of caps, a winter one styled on Kyle from "South Park"'s that makes the wearer look like a mong, and will make you sweat, and with the ears covered might stop you hearing cars as you cross the road flicking through your bundle ( I don't know, I won't wear it ) a cricket style hat, with an unstartched, floppy brim....that makes the wearer look like a mong, and a baseball cap which is a bit casual ( and one size will not fit all - my head size is @ 57cms, which is large, and my cap was adjusted as tight as possible, BEFORE I chopped my long hair down to a crew cut! ).
8: Finally, the most heinous point of my "J'accuse"...any issue items of uniform that find general favour and satisfaction from staff is withdrawn at the soonest opportunity, and replaced with similar or new design items of lesser quality and ability ( body warmers with zip off sleeves, Harrington jackets, etc ). However, RM are a forward looking company, and any item recieving high positive reviews from trial offices, and/or positive feedback after public announcements in The Courier, are quietly dropped and never again mentioned, let alone ordered for mass use ( cargo trousers and shorts, airtex style hi-viz, etc ).
So, yeah, definately pissed off and shat on.
Does anyone think I have issues with my anger...?

Maybe it isn't quite from Saville Row, but you can't deny the respect we get from the public when wearing a smart freshly laundered Royal Mail uniform.smokerjim wrote:Pissed off and shat on...viz,

It's good to get these types of threads, the ridiculous my manager said bollox, so we can reassure ourselves that while the world is falling apart, Royal Mail managers are still being the low-life C***S they have always been.

What you get is the dubious pleasure of working alongside the likes of smokerjim who think it's okay to use terms like mongs
