Can anyone give me some definitive answers to what seems to be a gray area for me. I'm a part - timer on 25hrs per week. Shift is 'officially' 9am to 2pm. I have never started at 9am, simply because I have the worst walk in my office, i.e. nothing but stairs and hills, nobody wants to touch it. If I start at 9am I won't get finished till after 2pm most days. So, for example, today I started at 8.15pm and finished at 2.30pm and worked through lunch. What overtime can I legitimately claim? I was not asked to come in before 9am, so I can't claim for that. I tried before and was chewed out by my manager. In fact I claimed for 2 'legtimate' hours over a 25hr week a couple of weeks ago and was read the riot act. because I didn't consult my manager beforehand.
I'm tempted to just start at 9am, which would help clarify my time working for each day with respect to going past 2pm, but as I say I would be out all day and I prefer to finish earlier.
So, in a nutshell, if I want to finish anywhere near 2pm I have to start work no later than 8am. Should I just start at 9am and 'dare' to claim overtime which I have to justify to my manager before putting in my claim sheet?
Any help with this is appreciated.

for gods sake grow a set will you!!!!!why don't you start at 9am and inform your lino before you go out on delivery that you will not be able to finish on time.make him have to make the decision on what to tell you to do(you may even hear the cogs whirling round in his head if you listen close enough).if he says you can't book overtime,inform him that you will have to cut off.if he says you can book overtime then YOU can decide if you want to or not.

Easy, Walk in the office door at 9am, do what you can, walk out the office door at 2pm ,don't forget your meal relief. Any problems is not your problems,you ain't paid to do resourcing

Royal Mail must be the only company in the UK that gets people to work for nothing through fear.
Imagine if everyone that works over their time or comes in early because they fear confrontation stopped doing so.
RM would go bust.

Jelly Totts your manager has refused the overtime because you did not advise him before you left to do the duty. In other words he wants you to get his/her permission before you leave the office. Although it is a pain in the arse it is the official way of doing it.
1. Come in on time.
2. Prep or finish prepping your delivery.
3. Estimate what time you would complete including taking your break.
4. If you wont go over - bundle and prepare to leave.
5. If you will go over ADVISE Manager immediately (the earlier the better).
6. Do as directed by Manager by either cutting off, leaving in, streaming or claiming overtime remembering that overtime is voluntary.
7. Bundle up and prepare to leave.
8. Take a break if desired before going on delivery. (or take it on delivery if able and willing to).
9. Leave and deliver till finish time then carry out managers directions as previously agreed.

Another example of Royal Mail forcing us 2 do free overtime which is actually illegal. New workers dont have a leg 2 stand on as they just say 'Do u want to pursue this in your trial period, you're too slow, we'll come and time you etc'. They really take the piss, u couldnt run round and finish on time as a 25hr a week worker. And to be paid around £12 for 2900 leaflets when a full time worker might only deliver 600 and get twice as much is ridiculous.
