Manager actually went out and knocked on a door to find out if the name on the letter was actually still living there.

Turns out he did and the letter in question had accidentally found its way into a posties kill off pile and he got a bollockin this mornin.

The manager in question is not the usual guy but a cover manager and he's a right ball breaker.

Is there any lengths these dims wont go to?

Given the hundreds of kill-offs every day, how on earth did he know which one to single out and check on?

Had the customer complained about their mail not getting through (in which case there must have been a number of similar instances) or had a fellow postie stuck a knife in your mate's back?

I think he got lucky tbh. But he's like a dog with a bone now, checking up on loads of kill offs from the same guy.

I swear he goes out of his way to find trouble.

Let's hope that he isn't so insensitive to call on someone who's just lost a partner and the mail is being killed off as the recipient is deceased.

I had one a few weeks ago letter came "not at this address" but the bloke still lives there, seems he just wanted this particular company to stop sending stuff but i was thinking about killing all his mail off that day but decided to check first, told him next time to put refused on it.

even if he knows they are gone away
only kill those that come back marked gone away

How would someone "accidentally" kill off a correctly addressed letter?

This can happen---I've done it myself! Pile of kill offs waiting to be endorsed, and sometimes when you turn away for a second a mate can throw over a mis-sort which lands on the pile, before you know it it can be killed off!

But they wouldn't be killed off would they? The letters would still be delivered to the house, especially if the widow/widower still lives there.

I only kill off letters that have 'gone away' or 'not known at this address' written on them. Isn't that right?

Thats the official way - at my Do some know their rounds so well that when someone leaves they kill the mail off. I don't too much of a risk - if householders want it killed off at source they can write a letter which if the manager accepts it I will comply with it.

I get paranoid with this,i've few houses with a sealed letter box,but i ALWAYS take the mail out anyway,you never know when they're going to unseal it for the new tennants.
I got burned once because of it.

Same with me, several houses on my duty have been adandonded and their letterboxes have been blocked but I still take any post out and try to deliver it and then endorse it when I return to the office.
