Odd Days...?

Was in work today when the Dom told me that i was on a weeks holiday next week as to use up some of my due odd-days.. Next week isn't viable for me to take leave so told him, to which he replied ' it isn't about you its what's best for the office. Is he right to do so or can i choose when and how i want to use my odd-days?

Don't they have to give you a minimum of a weeks notice for 1 weeks leave.

On the forced side I think under UK law they can tell you when to take leave

I think it would depend how many days holiday you are carrying over from last year.
If you have lots of outstanding holidays he may be within his rights.

your employer can make you take all or any of your holiday at a particular time, as long as they give you notice. This notice must be at least twice as long as the holiday they want you to take. For example, if your employer wants to have a Christmas shutdown for one week, they have to give you notice of the date the holiday is to start at least two weeks before it starts.

I didn't realize this until I looked it up. It seems pretty draconian to me. Doesn't appear that we get much say in the matter.

And while we are on the subject....... .who the hell keeps track of these soddin half days we should have and when do we have them??

To balance the odd half day each year, in our office we are given 23 days in the first year and 22 days in the second year and so on.
Works okay. A bigger problem is making sure that holiday is awarded when a rest day falls on a bank holiday.

but on the flip side,you have companys who close at certain times,have quiet periods etc
so need staff to take holidays at that time
EG when i was a chef you never got holidays in the busy periods
when i worked for a food supplier we had a week off at xmas as compulsory holidays
a good employer finds the happy medium

I get given a sheet with my holidays on, exact dates, well in advance. I take them all as I'm told, and never have any carried over.

With two kids at school, I've never had a single day when they've been off (other than Christmas), and haven't been on holiday with then for three years.

Think I'll ask about my 2011 summer hols soon, see if I can have them in august with the schools, instead if June or September.

What? Are you saying that your holiday dates are picked for you? or that you get told you must take 1 weeks holiday from jan-apr and then 2 weeks from june- oct kinda thing?

In my office its a 'round robin' set up.

At my office we are allowed to carry 5 days over. We can choose the rest whenever we like aslong as we pick them before the end of the working year.
Regarding being forced to take holiday i spoke to my union rep recently about this as i wanted to cancel 1 day of leave that i didn't need anymore. My dom said i couldn't cancel it as it was already booked but i got round this by saying "so and so" needs it and that was ok. Anyway i still asked my union rep if i would of been forced to take the day off and he said "no" as forced leave is not allowed.

Are you forced to take them before the end of the year (in which case you are forced) or do you have the "option" of just losing them?

Not in my office, I've carried over several weeks and I've known others to carry over more, it's up to the local management to agree it.
