what is the rule on carrying bags in a car. i was under the impression royal mail covers you to carry your first bag to your first delivery point. i've asked the manager and the rep and can't get a clear answer from either.the manager recited the usual threats about unofficial industrial action, if having agreed to use my car,i suddenly decide not to.i.m quite prepared to carry my first bag but no more.i'm rapidly approaching middle age so pretty soon i'm going to want a sports car and i wont get seven bags in one.there are no bag drops on my round and apparently they aren't going to put any in.

A. No. You have volunteered to use your car and not doing so incurs no sanction. However, if you are unreliable and give no notice of when you will or won’t, or say you will and then don’t, Royal Mail will prevent you from using your car and require you to use official acceleration instead by withdrawing its insurance from you.

Q20. If I sign up to use my private car, does the insurance cover me whilst I am on the delivery or only from the office to the first delivery point?

A. Up until now, if you have chosen to use Royal Mail’s insurance cover, you have only been covered to drive direct from the office to and from your first delivery point. You have not been covered to move your car along the delivery route. However the Royal Mail cover has now been extended in order to cover you should you have to move your car from the first delivery point, along the delivery route. You must be aware however, that the cover provided by the Business is for Third Party only. This means that the cost of damage to your car will not be met by the Royal Mail policy even if it was/is caused by another road user. If you cause, or are deemed to be the cause of the accident then the cost of damage to your car will not be met by the Royal Mail policy. Royal Mail will only cover the cost of repairs to the third party (even if your private policy is fully comprehensive). Your own private policy will be ineffective, as you have chosen to use Royal Mail’s cover. Where you have extended your private insurance policy to include business use your insurer should handle the claim for damage to your own car

Yes its an idle threat. Two choices either challange it head on or if you dont want the hassle invent a problem with your car i.e: clutch slipping etc and you cant use it. Then when your insurance is due remove the "business cover" and then you cant use it again. And you save some money.

One of our guys loads up a Mazda RX5 every day with the whole round. At xmas ive seen him having to lower the roof just to get the last bag in stacked on the passenger seat
