Do managers not think or just intentionally wind up?
I come in at 9, get banded up/sorted out for the latest 9:30.
Get taken out in the van, and after numerous drop offs before mine (I'm the furthest away), I start at around 10.
The round is 3:30 hours long, so I get finished for around 1:30. The round is exactly 4.5 miles away from the office, so if I walk back its over 1 hour (2:30 pm) and if I call the office for a pickup (when they answer the phone they always make me feel like a nuisance), it takes them at least 15 minutes to get them one out to me, so I get back for 2pm at the earliest.
How on earth to they expect me to fit lapsing in? I guess they'll use pressure tactics and try to force overtime, but I am NOT budging this time.

Trouble is i think, management are also under pressure from their superiors to reach unrealistic targets, therefore it has a knock on effect all the way down to us which is unfair.thevardinator wrote:Do managers not think or just intentionally wind up?

Their should be some kind of communication between unit management and higher tier managment to inform them of unmanageable workloads - which usually effects part - timers. I know there's all this talk about new kit etc.... but some offices are 2/3 years away from this, so in the meantime do we have to put up with crap on a regular basis??

The managment bonus culture needs to stop and stop now, managers need to manage the workload in a just and fair manner and what will work, not what will get them a tidy bonus and make the unit fail

Nice idea Limey but it's not just the bonus culture that drives savings....it's the whole business/profits ideal.
Look at the results for this year.£400million profits and according to even the union it's not enough so away we go on the cuts/savings merry-go-round again.
Now tell me why any manager from the top to the bottom would be interested in managing the workload in a just and fair manner under those pressures?

Re: Impossible Lapsing
Lapsing is an interesting thing.
I lapse , when and only when , I have time on duty.
Today I did not lapse. Not from a willful standpoint , but just the fact that my duty today takes the full time. No ifs, no buts, no may be.
I don't get hassled for this (though one never knows if that will change in future).
In my office we have people that will race around even faster indoors , so that they can lapse before they start their duty. How does that work?
Also, you have the guy that will do the lapsing at duty end. EVEN if they are over their time!!! And of course not claim. Again, how does that work?
There is still no realisation that this is all wrong and that job and finish has gone for good.
In addition; one guy today said to me ' the lapsing is onlt for the Summer , so by September it wont happen.
A ' thousand yard stare from me seemed appropriate'

I stand by my above statement, Lets not forget it's a public service owned by you and me, the public.fishtank wrote:AnotherLimey wrote:The managment bonus culture needs to stop and stop now, managers need to manage the workload in a just and fair manner and what will work, not what will get them a tidy bonus and make the unit fail

RM only needs to provide a service to the public, you and me, if it makes a profit GREAT!!#
The problem as we stand now is that we have a managment driven by a bonus culture, they get a huge bonus off our backs, it really needs to stop, and as i said before stop NOW!

Re: Impossible Lapsing
I used to go over my time with lapsing, I used to be basically forced/pressured into it. But now I've realised that I ain't taking no s**t from them anymore. I'm not working over my contracted hours just to get them a nice juicy bonus.

You are not wrong about the bonus culture but you are placing too much faith in it's removal having any effect on your workload.AnotherLimey wrote:I stand by my above statement, Lets not forget it's a public service owned by you and me, the public.fishtank wrote:AnotherLimey wrote:The managment bonus culture needs to stop and stop now, managers need to manage the workload in a just and fair manner and what will work, not what will get them a tidy bonus and make the unit fail

Managers will always look for savings from Higson down to your DOM....that's their job, lowest cost to the business is their mantra and the idea that it's service first, profits second may be our feelings but it is certainly not shared by management.

Re: Impossible Lapsing
Most managers will be axed when privatisation goes ahead.
Cant see any private investor keeping the shoddy excuse for management RM have at their disposal.
Ask yourself this: Why is Royal Mail in such dire straits?
Years of bad management.
