Cutting my job up!

Hey all,

just after a little advice. i do a conveyance atm and have no problem filling my 8 hours with pouch drops and parcels normally...

over the past month our dom has told everybody that they can still job and knock as long as the absorption is completed so all of a sudden everyone's using their own cars again and im left with nothing to do bar packets and a few firms but its clearly not enough work to fill 8 hours. Im having to absorb witch i dont mind as i have time, but id much prefer to just get on with the duty as it was when i signed for it.

spoken to our rep (who's pretty new) and he's say's he is going to look at getting some local agreements banning the use of PCOD in our DO but it will take a majority vote by the members to pass it. this im not to sure he will get. so if anybody has any advice tis would be helpful.

suppose my main question is am i in my right to demand that i pouch drop or will i just get laughed at for suggesting it? as it is i hear my walk is gone under the revision due to all the spare time i have witch again is a by product of other people and is totally out of my hands.

I may be wrong but does the private cars insurance policy only cover your 1st pouch i.e. the one you carry round and not for dropping off pouches or using cars as a mobile safe drop.

the insurance argument doesn't get us anywhere at our DO. apparently they all have the correct insurance. im not to sure how that all works as its something i've never needed but they say they are covered for the transport of the mail.

i'll have another word with the rep in the morn see what's what with the insurance but not holding my breath.

ask to see a copy of it, it won't cover for pouch drops

unless they have courier insurance they are not covered

and I also believe ( although I may be wrong) that if they are using their car as a RM vehicle ( which if they are carrying mail in they are) then the vehicle has to have been checked and passed fit by a RM mechanic or any insurance is not valid

in 99% of all cases in my DO the answer would be no

that means no insurance folks

popped in for the union meeting this morning and it looked as tho he was gonna get the majority vote so fingers crossed and hopefully it will get sorted soon.

tho i was surprised at the abuse he got just for suggesting people do the job properly. meh, good luck to him he's got my vote

one more question tho if i may. who would govern the local agreement? ie manager or rep? i know it sounds like a silly question, clearly you would have thought management but our current dom seems to push the fact you can make time as long as you absorb while rep is fighting for people to work all the hours they are supposed to. i could see the local agreement being ignored by runners and the dom if you see what i mean.

The most important part of this post and the bit the car users should fully understand is that it destroys jobs.
Suddenly drivers are left without work and before you know it two conveyence duties become one.
I personally coudn't give a toss if they are stupid enough to run about with no insurance and wreck their cars but if they expect support from me when it all goes pear shaped they are wasting their time.
If you want to use your vehicle for work my local takeaway is looking for a driver,the pay is crap and your car will smell like the inside of a pizza oven but at least you wont be f*cking up somebody else's job.

Just playing devils advocate here but isnt demanding these people get pouches dropped off purely so one driver can keep busy a bit selfish too? Why don't you relax, take it easy, take your time and enjoy a smaller workload. Posties using cars can get on with it the way they like and you get nice relaxing days!

The argument is, again playing devils advocate as though I was a manager. If I saw a driver was not fully employed I would then add to his duty until all hours were utilised. Then tackle the problem of there not being enough conveyance for pouches when a new posties starts, or cars are in for repair, or a cover man has no access to a car, then. After all why worry about something that might happen, rather than planning for all eventualities, does seem to run through the culture of Management at RM.

Back to CWU mind set, although I am against car use on principle, because they don't help offset the costs (my old job working for a MO firm did) of using my car for business use, if you accept the rules and drawbacks along with the benefits to you all power to your elbow, but please don't think that your actions and choices have no affect on anyone else. They might not on a day to day basis, granted, but it looks like from the posts above that there is a hidden cost.

However, if you want to use your car, and you follow the official rules

and the instruction of your own insurance company there is nothing I can do stop you, but I would ask myself are the benefits received enough to offset the extra costs and drawbacks

TBT the managers in my office wouldn't notice if we all went in naked with asses painted blue as long as all the work is out of the office they just couldn't care less

If I were a driver I'm pretty sure I could find ways to keep out of the office and under the radar
