Induction Day

Wahey!
Passed my interview last week and got offered the job today!
I am going to be a 20 hour per week postman (with occasional driving) in my little town but I have to go for a one day induction in Norwich's main mail centre which is only about 20 miles away. Quite surprised that this is not done at my town's office though.
What will this day be like? Will I be practising sorting mail? Or maybe just sitting through lectures about health and safety and policies? Should I dress to work or dress to impress?
I'm looking forward to getting out there.

Went to mine a tad over two years ago.

Dress 'smart/casual'

It was incredibly boring; badly presented. But you did get shown the correct way to pick up a bag... and got to do it yourself. How good was that!!!

Also; you will be spilt into groups to answer obvious questions/problems.

I think i might go along.....just for research obviously.

Two and a half years ago it was mine. Jeans and T shirt, 99% sitting on classroom listening to berk droning on. Couple of videos. Lifted a bag that was full of newspaper to see how heavy 16Kg is. Not shown how to pack the bag, not shown anything really, just desperately tried to stay awake and look interested.

Ditto, hours of 'Hello, My name is ........... and I'm going to be working at ............". Quite agree it will be the best and easiest day of your career at RM. You should really be asking what does the job entail because they won't tell you on your induction day!! If I were you I'd conserve your enthusiasm and energy because boy! you're gonna need it

Do us a favour, pop back on here in 6 months if you're still employed!

Congratulations - and welcome to hell.

For my sins, I'm about four years in so I reckon your induction will be very similar to mine and the others who have posted. Dress smart-casual or just plain casual, all you'll be doing for the vast majority of the day is sitting in a classroom listening to some disenfranchised bloke blather on about the state the business is in, he'll toss in some health and safety guffage for good measure, he'll demonstrate how to safely lift a fully laden pouch in a manner that would make an air hostess proud, and you might get paired off for some pointless group exercises. If your induction is at a mail centre, later in the day he might pick out some hapless inductee and ask him to throw some mail into a frame (the bloke he picked during my induction took about 15 seconds to find the correct slot in the sorting frame for his first letter - I don't think I would have been much better at that point). Then you'll go home wondering what all the fuss was about.

When you start for real, make sure you find out from your line manager how to book overtime - as a newbie, you'll be booking a lot of it, and line managers aren't exactly forthcoming these days when it comes to telling the new guys that they are entitled to book overtime when they finish past their official cut off time.

My Induction day was like all the others "my name is .... and I'ma alcoholic...sorry wrong group. W ehad some blokes who were chanigng jobs within RM so we had a lot of "we do it this way" followed by "thats the wrong way"

Best bit of advice given in hte whole day is to join the Union, do it there and then.

20 hrs is a laugh too, give it a month and you'll be doing 30 plus if you want it.

The induction day (or 2 days in my case) is easy, as the others say the hardest thing is staying awake it's that 1st week on delivery that will kill you, you'll be sent out with just a map (if you're lucky) and told to just get on with it (maybe my office is a bad example).
