AMSTERDAM, April 2 (Reuters) - Dutch mail company TNT NV is set to announce a reorganisation plan for its Dutch mail business on Tuesday that will include job cuts but avoid forced layoffs, Dutch news agency ANP reported.

ANP said on Monday the dominant Dutch mail company, which is set to lose its remaining monopoly in the Netherlands next year, would seek to change the employment terms for mail delivery to compete better with rivals Sandd and Deutsche Post's


TNT's Dutch mail business is one of the Netherlands' biggest employers with about 59,000 people, while its competitors have few permanent staff and pay delivery people by the number of items delivered, leading to a big gap in pay and benefits.

A TNT spokeswoman declined to comment on the report.

The company said in December that it aimed to cut costs in its mail division by 300 million euros ($400 million) by 2015. TNT did not comment on job cuts at the time, and analysts are waiting for TNT to specify what provision it will take for implementing the cost savings.

TNT is also seeking to compensate for shrinking mail volumes at home by growing abroad, particularly in Britain and Germany, and expects to benefit from the liberalisation of the European mail market, due by 2009 according to European Commission plans.

TNT has forecast average revenue growth of 18 percent per year for its mail business outside the Netherlands, leading to annual revenue in that segment of 1.7 billion euros by 2012.

Dutch mail has faced severe competition and is being under-cut competitors coming in and offering an alternative payment system. Don't be surprised if you see some form of this system applied in the UK. It didn't very well initially but has improved and with modern IT technology in place TNT are now being attacked in their own backyard.

Well well done the EU,because all that's happened since the market was open is cost jobs.
TNT want their staff to have a pay freeze for the next two and a half years along with other changes to employee benefits.

They have also said this...

"With these measures the company believes it can limit the loss to between 6,500 and 7,000 jobs, most of which can be absorbed by natural attrition and assisted reemployment," a statement from the postal company read.

Although the firm said it would be discussing the changes with trade unions, TNT Post stressed that "unfortunately it may not be possible to avoid involuntary redundancies".

This whole thing f***ing stinks,while we take the piss out of TNT and the like and in reality want them to fail here because of
OUR jobs,our fellow Posties Europe wide are going through the same s**t as us.
But even though this was warned Europe wide this shite still went ahead.

Interesting argument that the big boys seem to playing on,RM have given us the bollox that we are payed more than our competitors,seems our orange friends are jumping on the bandwagon,or is this a carefully planned ploy.

competitors paid 7 euros-to-9 euros an hour while a mailman cost 22 euros-to-24 euros.

"We don't want to mirror the very low pay that competitors pay their workers ... but we do want to get hourly pay more in line with the overall market, and we think that costs for mailmen are 20 to 25 percent above the overall market

``We're stunned,'' said Anneke Stevens, a representative of Dutch labor union ABVAKABO FNV. ``These proposals are really bad. TNT doesn't only want to cut jobs, but it also seems that labor conditions for the people staying behind will worsen.''

Stevens said she expects the 11,000 TNT workers who are members to be ``very emotional'' and reject the proposals when they meet in the next couple of weeks. The union said it won't accept any moves toward mass firings.

If I were in your shoes I'd recommend the CWU does the following:

Get together with the the European postal unions and put a stop to European liberalisation at the expense of reformed working conditions. If they refuse then call for a European wide strike.

As you can see from the news clips above the competitors in this country are actually facing problems in their own country and they each try and take the others mail volume. The only winners are the big customers on price.
