leaving RM, help wanted

hi guys, on a part time contract and i am thinking of applying for a few jobs outside of RM. their closer to home and better pay.
thing is, in the application form it asks for a reference from your present boss / line manager. Would i be wise to ask our DOM for a ref, or would he throw a fit and refuse to as im leaving ?
any ideas people?

Im sure hes used to it TBH . Many many people leave everyday . And he cant refuse .

references are rarely taken up until you are offered the post and its unlikely he would refuse as i don't think an employer is allowed to do this?

maybe you get on better with a manager that you could put as a contact?

or even put down the HR address up in Sheffield, by the time they find the right person's desk up there, you'll be on the way to retirement.

besides which, if you're leaving why are you bothered about what he thinks? any funny business from him might look like intimidation..........at RM?

He should in theory pass on references you came to RM with, and then add his own comments, he cannot tell lies, but he can be honest, so if you are a poor timekeeper he can say that in the reference, most companies like RM deal with references through HR anyway, and all they will report is if there have been any problems with your employment, but like has been said by the time anyone at Sheffield bothers to reply you'll be an OAP, so I would refer any requests for references there.

Royal Mail policy says they don't do references. At all. if you're pally with a lino you could ask them, or a colleague you trust.

looked for an official line on this, but I was told in my office RM do not give out references. Not sure why. I'll double check at work tomorrow.

Do not put your DOM down. He is not allowed to give a reference anyway. Everything goes through HR - and Royal Mail do not give out references.

All you get is Start Date, Leaving Date and Reason for Leaving. And Grade. That is it.

Royal Mail have a office based in the HR services in Bristol which you can obtain job and mortgage references......When you leave the business they will send you a reference with the hours you worked when started and finished and what you went out with. You can get a fuller job reference when your new employer writes to Bristol..

After you leave, H/R send you a basic confirmatory letter to say you worked there from when you started until you left.
They do not do a personal, 'reference' as such. And, I found out recently, should you apply for another job, then under the data -protection act, you cannot now just put down a refereees name! All you can put initially, is references will be supplied if requested!You then have to get the permission of person.
