Injury? - Help?

Post by Vinnie JG »

Hey Guys..

Thought i would ask you guys before i go back into my DO.. I have just been signed off sick for two weeks at the least with a troubling knee injury (virtually a RSI in the knee). Knowing that I'm only 20 this is not a good thing.. BUT i have only been working for RM since January. As I have been an Extreme Sports instructor before joining RM i know i was very fit so this both took me and my doctors as a surprise. So at time of joining RM i was as healthy as i could have been..

I was wondering what i will be told when i got back to work as my doctor has informed me that the round i am on (which includes 99% steps and 100% hills) needs to be looked at to stop me having this problem again or to be put on lighter duties.

I'm not sure if RM will just show me the door or help me out on this? As i want to continue my job but not if its going to cause me problems.

Cheers

As it's unusual to suffer such an injury at just 20 might involvement in 'Extreme Sports' have brought it on, and as part of your rehabilitation might these best be totally avoided in the future, dominoes or crib perhaps being sensible alternatives ?

You will probably already be referred to ATOS so I would follow the advice on here about using them- ask for a face to face.

Also I would get your doctors recommendation in writing so its included in your personnel file. Also start keeping all paperwork relating to the injury doctors notes, stage warnings, note down sick periods, get the ATOS advice in writing.

I think it highly unlikely that someone aged 20 will know what crib is, let alone know how to play. (Do you play "one for his knob?")
Backgammon might have been a more "sensible" suggestion.

Maybe not old but about mid-forties (at least) would be my guess.

Just so you know when i say Extreme Sports i was an instructor in climbing, mountain biking and kayaking. Also i know i was physically fit because i am a qualified beach life guard and anyone who has done the assessment for that will back me up that any niggling problem would appear then :confused

Also thanks TBT I will be making sure my GP includes his verdict in a letter along with the "fit note" I'm sure he will issue me in a week or so. I figured this would have to go through ATOS but will read up on the advice on here.

Last but not least..

I would like to let you know i do know how to play crib :P (not that i have played it since i was 12) so us youngsters aren't as stupid as you think :P

I don't think it's right that one walk should be 99% steps and all hills.

It's bad planning, the steep gradients and stepped areas should be shared out among walks.

I am facing similar physical probs. Surely taking painkillers isn't a satisfactory solution? What would the consequences be if an individual was in no position to carry on the duty he was originally employed to do and no alternative position was available? If the injuries occured as a result of the job what would be the next step.

I thought you'd made that up. I had to google it.
Someone else has made it up.
Sad about having to marry your sister. Explains the accent though.

The thing is doing a duty that is all hills and/or stairs, it does aggravate any knee injury, especially going downhill/stairs. That's what aggravated mine, and it's still not right

It depends on the nature of the injury (all you said was, it's similar to RSI). For example: if it's a cartilage injury, then it could be a cumulative effect. Which would mean that neither would be the sole cause. :hmmmm

But regardless of the cause. You need to recover, before you go back to work. And you need to make sure that your walk is looked at, so that you don't have problems in the future.
